(b) A t the end o f the second (Sophom ore) year, the U n iv e rs ity w ill conduct an In te rm e d ia te E xam ina tion in the m on th o f June— (i) Subjects to be tested fo r each stud en t: Chinese, E nglish, a paper on his m ajor subject, a paper on his m in o r subject, and a paper on his elective w h ich may be General E ducation. ( I t should be noted tha t each paper is n o t a course exam ination, b u t one on a sub je ct-fie ld.) (ii) T h e nature and fo rm o f the exam ination, and the m in im um standard required should be worked o u t by each Board o f Studies d ire c tly concerned, subject to the approval o f the Senate. ( iii) Students s ittin g fo r the In term edia te E xam ina tion m ust be recommended by each College o f the U n iv e rs ity . (iv) Students who fa il in one o r tw o papers w ill be req u ire d to take at least three more years o f residence before taking the Degree E xam ina tio n . U p o n the recommendation o f the Board o f Studies, however, some o f these students may be given a supplem entary exam ination in September o f the year. (V) Students who fa il in more than one h a lf o f the papers w ill be asked to leave the U n iv e rs ity . (c) A t the end o f the th ird (Jun io r) year, the students w ill take the firs t pa rt o f the Degree E xam ina tion, given by the U n iv e rs ity , covering about one- th ird o f the Degree papers. (d) A t the end o f the fo u rth (Senior) year, the U n iv e rs ity w ill give the second pa rt o f the Degree E xam ina tion consisting o f the other tw o -th ird s o f the papers. A w ritte n thesis may be required, th is to be recommended by each Board o f Studies fo r either all o r some o f the graduating students. In tha t event, the thesis may be regarded as a sub stitute fo r such pa rt o f the Degree E xam ina tion as determ ined by the Senate at the recommendation o f the Board. T h is g ra n t w ill provide passage to the U n ite d States fo r D r. George H .C . W ong, Chairm an o f the D e p a rt m ent o f H is to ry and Geography at C hung C h i College, who has been appointed Research Associate fo r the year 1965/66 at F letcher School o f L aw and D iplom acy. T h e Asia F oun da tion had also agreed to make an u n co n d itio n a l grant o f US$12,000 fo r developing research in bo th In s titu te s fo r a pe riod up to June, 1966. T h e R otary C lu b o f H o ng K o n g Island W est has donated a sum o f $5,000 to the U n iv e rs ity as a con trib u tio n to the E x tra -M u ra l D e pa rtm e n t's educational fu n d fo r p rom o tin g school counselling and guidance activities.
