T he Committee is to advise the University on the development of a programme of journalism education and communications research. Mo re specifically, it is expected to assist the Mass Communications Research Center at the Institute of Social Studies and the Humanities and the Department of Journalism i n assessing the overall needs of the Ho n g K o n g and Asian community in respect of training and research in journalism, in exploring the most effective ways of fulfilling these needs and in securin g the necessary co-operation of the c ommun i t y. ADMI SS ION TO THE SCHOOL OF EDUCAT I ON Twen t y - one successful candidates have been enrolled by the School o f Education for the year 1965/66 ,and classes began on September 20 . T he School of Education invited applications for admission on Jul y 8, 1965 and there were a total of 107 applications. Fifty-three successfully passed the written examination held on July 29, and were give n the opportunity of an interview by a Selection Panel. LAOT I AN SPECIAL STUDENTS Three Laotian students wou l d be coming to Ho ng Ko ng to study at the New Asia College of T h e Chinese University. T h ey are sent over by the M i n i s t ry of Education of the Royal Government of Laos on government scholarships and are selected among the best students who recently completed their Secondary Schools. Th e Chinese University is admitting these students as associate students who wo u ld be allowed to take courses offered to regular students of the University. SOCIAL WORK SELECTION BOARD T h e Selection Board on Social Wo r k Education completed its wo rk for 1965/66 on August 18, 1965 when the final list of candidates who applied successfully for admission into the Department of Social Work in Ch u ng Chi and Un i t ed Colleges was approved. A total of twenty-one students were admitted into Ch u ng Chi College. Amo ng t h em five were f r om New Asia College. Fourteen of the twenty-on e students were enrolled for Case-work T r a i n i ng and five for G r o u p - Wo rk Training. Un i t ed College admitted twelve students int o its Social Wo rk Department, all o f them were originally students of Un i t ed. Transfer and registration were completed in early September and classes have already started. SOCIAL WORK SCHOLARSHIPS L Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank I n commemoration of its Centenary in 1965 and to attract some of the best undergraduates to a career in social work, the H o ng K o ng and Shanghai Banking Corporation has donated certain investments to the University to b r i ng in an annual income of approximately $25,000 for the award of scholarships, under the following regulations: T h e scholarships shall be k n own a s the " H o n g K o ng and Shanghai Bank Scholarships" and shal l be awarded to students who intend to take up Social Wo r k as a career u p on completion of their courses. T h e scholarships shall be tenable by t h i rd an d f o u r th year students in the Department of Social Wo rk at either Ch u ng Chi College or Un i t ed College. T h e scholarships shall be awarded to candidates of sufficient academic ability who are genuinely intereste d i n social work as a career; character, motivation, personality, and sense of responsibility shall also be given prime consideration. I f no candidate o f sufficient merit is presented for selection, no awar d shall be made. Each scholarship shall be of the valu e of $5,000 per annum for a ma x i mum period of two years and may not be held at the same time as an y other Scholarship. Holders of other scholarships or bursaries shall be eligible to apply, but they must agree to surrender tenure of their other awards if they are successful. Te n u re shall be subject to satisfactory academic progress and evidence of continued interest in social work. ( A l t hough the possession of financial means shall not prevent candidates being awarded the scholarships, nevertheless, where the merits of any candidate s are equal, preference shall be given to a candidate who wou ld not otherwise be able to afford to enter the University.) T he awards shall b e made irrespective of sex, race, and nationality, but preference shall be given first to candidates whose domicile is in H o ng K o n g and then to those in other parts of the Far East who are proficien t in Chinese. T h e number of awards each year w i ll be variable depending on the funds available. 13
