I t gives me particular pleasure to be able to announce at this point that exploratory discussions w i th the School of Oriental and African Studies in the University of L o n d on have now resulted in an agreement in principle on a number of steps to be taken, the first of wh i ch w i ll be a f o rm of interchange of faculties and in due course also of research scholars. As you may know, the School is going to celebrate its Golden Jubilee next year and its director, Professor C . H. Philips, is one of our four overseas members on the University Council. Arrangements of the same nature are also being worked out w i th St. Antony's College of Ox f o rd University, the University of British Columbia, and Yale University, W i l l i am College and Da r t mo u th College. Inter-University co-operation is vital to the development of T he Chinese University, and present s great challenges to our faculty members and students. On their behalf, I wou l d like to express our deep appreciation of the co-operation that the University of California extends to us. May it grow and prosper in the years to come to the lasting benefits of both of our universities. COMINGS & GOINGS Visit of Overseas Council Members T w o of the University Council's overseas members, Sir John Fulton, Vice-Chancellor of University of Sussex, and Professor C. H . Philips, Director, School of Oriental Studies, University of London, arrived in October to attend a Council meeting held on September 25, at the invitation of Vice-Chancellor C h o h - M i ng Li. ( G r o up picture of Council, see p.11.) T w o other Overseas members, President Nathan M . Pusey of Harvard University and President Clark Ke rr of University of California, were also invited by the University to visit Ho ng K o ng but both were not able to come this year. Sir John Fulton, “ T h e Father of th e Chinese University" as one local newspaper called him, has been in H o n g K o n g for many times whe n he was the Chairman of a Commission, since k n own as Fulton Commission, to study the feasibility of establishing the University. He was also here in 1964 to receive an honorary degree f r om the University. 6
