In 1962, he went to H a rva rd U n iv e rs ity as a v is itin g scholar. D r . T a m Shang W a i, Chung Chi, Chemistry. D r. T a rn was b orn in H o ng K o n g and received his early education at the Diocesan Boys' School. H is performance in the m a tric u la tio n exam ination in 1955 bought h im the award o f the K in g Edw ard V I I S cholarship and the G ove rnm en t Scholarship. He read science at the U n iv e rs ity o f H o ng K o n g where he received his B .S c., and later B.Sc. Special (H onours) in 1958 and 1959. H e was appointed dem onstrator in the D e pa rtm e n t o f C h em istry o f the same U n iv e rs ity , where he carried ou t research on the chem ical constituents o f certain plants indigenous to H o ng K on g . He was awarded the degree o f M . Sc. in 1961. In the same year D r. T a m was awarded a C ommonwealth Scholarship tenable in the U n ite d K in g d om fo r research in organic chem istry w ith Professor A .W . Johnson, F .R .S ., at the U n iv e rs ity o f N o ttin g h am , where he received his doctoral degree in 1964. A fte r his marriage in England, he and his w ife went to Sw itzerland where they stayed fo r one year, d u rin g w h ich D r. T a m was a research associate to Professor C .A . G rob at the In s titu t f ü r O rganische Chem ie der U n iv e rs it ä t Basel. He was elected to the Associateship o f the Royal In s titu te o f C h em istry in 1963. D r. T arn returned to H o ng K o n g w ith his fam ily in June 1965 to take up a lectureship in organic chem istry and con cu rre n tly wardenship o f No. 1 M en's Hostel o f Chung C h i College. OBITUARY D r. Tsao Maak-sang, Senior L e c tu re r in C hem istry, C hung C h i College, died on F e b ruary 8 at the age o f fo rty -e ig h t. D r. Tsao was a native o f Kw a ng tu ng and a devoted C h ristian and teacher. She was a graduate o f L in g n a n U n iv e rs ity and a P h .D . in organic chem istry o f the U n iv e rs ity o f C a lifo rn ia . She had taught at the U n iv e rs ity o f C a lifo rn ia and at P ittsbu rgh. H e r works were published in many noted academic journals. D r. Tsao jo in e d the staff o f C hung C h i College in 1962. She went to the U n ite d States last summ er on a research to u r and returned at the end o f October. She had been ill since. In comm em oration o f D r. Tsao, C hung C h i College has established a " D r . Tsao M aaksang S cho la rship" . C o n trib u tio n s w ill be welcome. COMINGS AND GOINGS △ M r. L i Sheng-wu, Associate Research Fellow o f the Research In s titu te o f N ew Asia College, is now v is itin g Japan. W h ile in Japan he exchanges views on the study o f Chinese w ith noted Japanese scholars and is collecting m aterial fo r his thesis ‘ ‘A S tud y o f I Ching (Book o f Changes)". 7
