T s e ng was elected M e m b er of the Phi T a u Phi Scholastic H o n or Society of China, awarded a golden K e y, and granted a research H a r v a r d - Y e n c h i ng Fellowship. She received her M . A . degree f r om Y e n c h i ng Un i v e r s i ty in 1936. A f t er teaching in various high schools and a college in N a n k i ng and Meihsien, M r s. T s e ng went to Chungking in 1940 and became Ed i t or and D e p u ty Chief of the Cu l t u r al Affairs De p a r t me nt of the Wome n 's Ad v i s o ry Comm i t t ee of the N ew L i f e Mo v eme n t. I n 1944, she was Commissioner of the Research Bureau of the M i n i s t ry of Social Affairs of the Na t i o n al Go v e r nme n t. I n 1945, she went to live in Eu r o pe u n t il 1950, when she returned to H o n g K o n g. Be g i n n i ng f r om 1951, she wo r k ed at Pooi T o G i r l s' M i d d le School as a librarian and a teacher of Chinese and Translation, u n t il she j o i n ed N ew Asia College in Au g u s t, 1956. Getell, President of M o u n t H o l y - oke College, and his wife paid a visit to the Un i v e r s i ty d u r i ng their short stay in H o n g K o n g. • M r . A . Carl Ko t c h i a n, Executive Vice-President of Lockheed A i r c r a ft Comp a n y, U . S . A ., accompanied by his wife, arrived in H o n g K o n g on M a y 20. T h ey visited the Un i v e r s i ty site at M a L i u Shui and C h u ng C h i College on M a y 21. • T h e Ho n o u r a b le J . D . I . Gass , Colonial Secretary of H o n g K o n g, visited U n i t ed College on M a y 19, and N ew Asia College on M a y 12, 1966. He was met by the Presidents and faculty members and shown r o u nd the Colleges. • M r . B.P. Schoyer, Vice-President of N ew Asia College, has returned f r om leave. He resumed his office on M a y 6. • Prof. T a n g C h u n - i, Dean of A r ts of this University and N e w Asia College, has accepted an invitation f r om the Un i v e r s i ty of Co l umb ia to attend a conference on Ming T h o u g h t. Prof. T a n g left for the States on A p r i l 13. D u r i n g his absence, D r . Ch a ng Pao-heng, head of the De p a r t me nt of English at N ew Asia, acted for h i m as College Dean. • M r . Ricardo V. Puno, Jr., " M o s t Outstanding Student of the Year in the Philippines ”, called on New- Asia College and U n i t ed College on M a y 19 t o meet student leaders of the t wo Colleges, M r . Puno is a student of Political Science in the Un i v e r s i ty of Ateneo. UNIVERSI TY AND COLLEGE NEWS I N BRIEF • U n i t e d College, in cooperation w i t h the W i l l i ams- i n - H o n g K o n g Programme, is sponsoring a special s ummer school this year. T h e 1966 s ummer school w i ll offer an intensive proficiency course in spoken En g l i sh to social welfare personnel and teachers in government and p r i ma ry and secondary schools (both Chinese and A n g l o- Chinese). T h e course for teachers w i ll be conducted f r om July 25 to Au g u st 26, while the course for social welfare personnel w i ll extend f r om July 18 to Au g u st 26. T h e s ummer school is directed by the W i l l i ams Representative in H o n g K o n g. Teachers of the s ummer school w i ll be students of W i l l i ams College, W i l l i ams t own, Massachusetts, U . S . A ., all of t h em native En g l i sh speakers. • N ew Asia College, in order to f u r t h er i mp r o ve the undergraduates' standard of spoken English, has instituted an " E n g l i sh H o u r " at the College. It takes place once a week either on Wednesday or Thursday afternoon, d u r i ng wh i ch staff and students meet to discuss in English on a chosen topic over a cup of tea. A N e w Asia w i l l sponsor an e x h i b i t i on of Chinese p a i n t i n g and calligraphy by local student s of post- secondary colleges and secondary schools f r om June 4 to June 6. T h i s is the t h i rd of its k i n d. • A two-week book e x h i b i t i on called ‘ ‘ T he Wo r l d of Paperbacks 一 1966" was opened on 19th M a y in the l i b r a ry of N ew Asia College. A great variety of books were on display, i n c l u d i ng many titles on Economics, Political Science, Culture, Education, Religion, H i s t o r y, Geography, Linguistics, Fine A r ts and the Na t u r al Sciences.
