G I F T F R O M I T A L Y A beautiful bronze bust of Da n te A l i g h i e ri was presented by D r . L u i l g i Bolla , Italian Co n s u l - Ge n e r al in H o n g K o n g, to D r . C h o h - M i ng L i , Vice-Chancellor of the Un i v e r s i t y, at a brief ceremony held on F r i d a y, M a y 6 , at 4 : 30 p . m. in the Conference Ro om of the Central Office. T h e ceremon y was attended by ma n y distinguished people f r om the local Italian c ommu n i t y , members of the Un i v e r s i ty Council, and senior members of the staff of the Un i v e r s i t y. T h e gift is an acknowledgment f r om the Italian Go v e r nme n t of the Un i v e r s i t y 's c o n t r i b u t i o n to learning and a token to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the poets’ b i r t h . T h i s noble artistic wo rk w i ll be p u t t emp o r a r i ly in the Conference Ro om of the University Central Office u n t il the completion of the Un i v e r s i ty campus at M a L i u Shui. I t w i ll eventually be displayed in the Un i v e r s i ty L i b r a r y . M a n y distinguished guests attended the ceremony, after wh i ch tea and refreshments were served. S T A F F P R O F I L E S Dr. Chao Chuan-ying, Senior Lecturer, B i o l o g y, New Asia College. D r . Chao was b o rn in K a r d i ng in the Province of Kiangsu. He obtained his degree of B.S. f r om Shanghai Un i v e r s i ty in 1946 and the degree of M . S . f r o m the Na t i o n al T a i w an Un i v e r s i ty in 1950. He then taught at the De p a r t me nt of Botany of the Na t i o n a l T a i w an Un i v e r s i ty u n t il 1955, A f t er obtainning his degree of Do c t or of Philosophy f r om th e Un i v e r s i ty of I l l i n o is in 1957 , he was appointed Professor of Botany at the Na t i o n al T a i w an Un i v e r s i ty and concurrently a p a r t - t i me Research Fe l l ow in the I n s t i t u te of Botany of the Academia Sinica. I n 1961, he was invited by the Na t i o n al A c a d emy of Sciences, U . S. A ., to do research at the I n d i a na Un i v e r s i ty for t wo year as a V i s i t i ng Research Scientist. D r . Chao j o i n ed N ew Asia College in 1963 , and is at present Senior L e c t u r er in the De p a r t me nt of Biology. A m o n g D r . Chao's publications are Comparative Anatomy of the Woods of the Cornaceae and Allies, Heterotic Effects of a Chromosomal Segment of Maize, Cytological and Genetic Changes Induced by X-rays and Thermal Neutrons in Rice, and A Cytotaxonomic Study of the Disporum of Taiwan. Mr. Mok Ho Fei, Lecturer, Chinese Literature, New Asia College. M r . M o k Ho Fei is a native of Kwa n g s i. A f t er o b t a i n i n g his Bachelor's degree i n Chinese literature f r o m K u o - m i n Un i v e r s i ty in Canton, he diverted his attention to the study of classical history. H e came to H o n g K o n g i n 1954 t o wo rk for a newspaper. D r . Ch ' en M u , f o rme r President of N e w Asia College, became interested in his w r i t i n g. He 4
