interest in biological subjects. D u rin g 1956-60, he studied b iolo gy and chem istry at the H ong K o n g Baptist College on a F ran k Shu Scholarship ; he made it a habit to collect H o ng K o n g orchids and H ong K o n g ferns d u rin g those years. In 1960, he was awarded the L am C h i-F u n g Scholarship and the F rank Shu Scholarship to study b io chem istry at B aylor U n iv e rs ity in the U n ite d States. He jo in e d the B iochem istry D e pa rtm ent o f the U n iv e rs ity o f C a liforn ia , Berkeley, in 1961, and received his M aster degree there w ith in a year. H a ving developed an interest in bacteriophage, he went to the In s titu te o f M o le cu la r B iology, U n iv e rs ity o f Oregon, to w o rk unde r Professor S treisinger on bacterio phage development inside the infected bacteria. He was awarded a P redoctoral T raineeship by the U .S . P ub lic H ealth Service fo r all the three years he spent at the U n iv e rs ity o f O regon, and was elected a member o f Sigma Si, a national hono rary science society. He also pa rticipated in the Phage M ee tin g in Cold S pring H a rb o r in the summ er o f 1963, and the Federation M ee tin g o f E xpe rim ental B iology, A tla n tic C ity , in the spring o f 1965. H is chief research results were presented by D r. S treisinger on the M o le c u la r B iology Meetings at H aw aii in the summer o f 1965. D r. M a rk received his P h .D . degree in M o le cu la r B iology in A ugust, 1965. On his way back to H o ng K ong, he visited the In s titu te o f M o le cu la r B iology and B io physics o f Yale U n iv e rs ity , the In s titu te o f M o le cu la r B iology o f C am bridge U n iv e rs ity , the M ic ro b io lo g y Labo ra to ry o f U n iv e rs ity o f D enm ark at Copenhagen, and the N a tion a l M o le c u la r B iology Research U n it at Naples, Ita ly . D r. M a rk is now a le ctu re r in the D e pa rtm e n t o f B iology, N ew Asia College. H is research interest is in the biochem ical changes tha t occur in a bacterial cell infected by bacteriophage T 4 . F r . J o h n Gannon, S. J ., Un i t e d College, Lect ur er in English L i te ra tu re. F r. Gannon was born in Ire la nd in 1922. He entered the society o f Jesus in 1939, com p le ting his n oviceship tra in in g tw o years later. He then entered the N ational U n iv e rs ity o f Irela nd , U n iv e rs ity College D u b lin , where he too k a F irs t Class H onours B .A . degree in 1944. T h is was follow ed by a three-year course in Philosophy, scholastic and modern, at the end o f w h ich F r. Gannon jo ine d the group o f Iris h Jesuits w o rking in H ong K o n g and Canton. F rom 1947-49 he studied Cantonese in Canton. In the fo llow in g year he taught in the H o ng K o n g W ah Yan College, and in 1950 he returned to Ire la nd fo r five years' study o f theology and ord in a tion to the priesthood, taking fu rth e r degrees o f B.S. and S .T .L . R e tu rn in g to H o ng K o n g in 1955 , he spent another year on the study o f Cantonese before entering Chu H a i College as a le ctu rer in E ng lish in A p r il 1956. He tau ght in Chu H a i College u n til 1963, when he le ft H o ng K o n g fo r fu rth e r studies in the U n ite d States. F o r six o f the years tha t he taught at Chu H a i College he was Head o f the D e pa rtm e n t o f Foreign Languages and L ite ra tu re , as w e ll as a m em ber o f the College Board o f Trustees. D u rin g th is period he also unde r took p a rt-tim e teaching in U n ite d College and in N ew Asia College, was D ire c to r o f a Chinese cu ltu ra l magazine, T s in g N in M a n Yau (靑 年 文 友 ), founder and supervisor o f the College C lu b fo r Post-Secondary Students, and fou nde r o f the Federation o f Catholic Students, a body w h ic h embraces the C atholic societies o f the tw o universities, the Post-Secondary Colleges and the Teachers' T ra in in g Colleges. In 1963-64, F r. G annon spent a year at Co lum b ia U n iv e rs ity , taking an M .A . degree in E nglish L ite ra tu re . R e tu rn ing to H o ng K o n g in 1964 he entered U n ite d College as an Assistant Le ctu re r. He was prom oted to L e c tu re r in 1965. He has published a num be r o f sho rt stories in The I r i s h M o n t h l y , and tw o c ritic a l articles in Studies.
