He is also the inventor of He l ix systems for apartment houses. D r . Pei's report to the Vice-Chancellor is expected to be of great value to the development of the University campus site. URBAN STUDY CENTRE SET UP I N THE UNIVERSI TY T h e Un i v e r s i ty has recently set up an U r b an Study Centre. M r . C . C. Hu , Senior L e c t u r er and Head of the De p a r t me nt of Sociology, and D r . James Beaudry, L e c t u r er in Sociology, bo th at U n i t ed College, have been appointed D i r e c t or and Associate D i r e c t or respectively. T h e Centre, located at Un i t ed College, is to provide t r a i n i ng opportunities in field wo rk for sociology students, and to conduct research on urban social structure and development in H o n g K o n g. T h e activities of the Centre w i ll be coordinated w i t h the wo rk of the Village Research Centre at C h u ng Chi and the Un i v e r s i t y 's Social Survey Research Centre. T h e Asia Foundation has generously made a grant of HK$ 7 , 5 5 1 . 20 for the establishment of the Centre. DR. PHI L IP M. HAUSER'S PUBLIC LECTURE On No v emb er 4 , a p u b l ic lecture under the auspices of the Un i v e r s i ty on " I mp l i c a t i o ns of Wo r l d Population T r e n d s ” was given by D r . Philip M . Hauser at N ew Asia College. T h e lecture was attended by many members of the public and a large group of social workers in H o n g K o n g, besides a great n umb er of the University's students and staff members. D r . Hauser, a P h . D. at the University of Chicago, is D i r e c t or of the Population Research and T r a i n i ng Centre at the University of Chicago and President of the American Sociological Association. He first taught at the Un i v e r s i ty of Chicago, and in later years successively held the posts of Wa l k e r - Ames Professor at the University of Washington and V i s i t i ng F o rd Professor at Indiana University. He has also been, for many years, statistical consultant to various boards and commissions on population and vital statistics and the director of various population research centres. D r . Hauser is a member of the American Statistical Association, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Ame r i c an Sociological Society, and the American Philosophical Society. I n the lecture, D r . Hauser surveyed the general population p r o b l em and suggested b i r th control to be the only effective solution. LAW CONFERENCE AND WORK I NG PARTY D r . Shou-sheng Hsueh, Reader in Public Administration assigned to U n i t ed College, and D r . K . H . Hwa n g, Assistant Registrar of the University, have been invited to participate in the Conference on International L aw to be held in H o n g K o n g at the beginning of January next year. T h e Conference, co-sponsored by the Un i v e r s i ty of H o n g K o n g and the Institute of International Studies of the Un i v e r s i ty of the Philippines, w i l l be attended by international lawyers f r om many Asian countries i n c l u d i ng Ceylon, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. T h r ee ma in topics w i l l be discussed at the Conference : the State and Foreign Investments, Succession, and Pacific Settlement of International Disputes. D r . Hwa n g, who is a Barrister-at-law, also represents the Vice-Chancellor at a wo r k i ng party appointed by Sir M i c h a el Hogan , the Chief Justice of H o n g Ko n g, to consider and report whether it is desirable and practicable to provide in H o n g K o n g, if possible t h r o u gh collaboration w i t h the Universities, the teaching and t r a i n i ng wh i ch w o u ld enable a candidate to qualify for admission as a barrister to the Bar in H o n g K o n g w i t h o ut the necessity of proceeding overseas ; whether the existing facilities for solicitors to obtain their qualifications w i t h o ut proceeding overseas are satisfactory, and, in particular, whether there should be any additional training or examination in the laws of H o n g K o n g. T h e wo r k i ng party is led by the Ho n. Sir I vo Rigby, the Senior Puisne Judge. T h e A t t o r n e y - Ge n e r al of H o n g Ko n g, the H o n g K o n g Bar Association, the H o n g K o n g L aw Society and b o th local Universities are represented. 3
