T h e Ad v i s o ry Comm i t t ee for the Social Survey Research Centre of the Un i v e r s i ty was appointed early this year to advise the Vice-Chancellor, who is concurrently D i r e c t or of the Institute of Social Studies and Huma n i t i e s, on the research and postgraduate t r a i n i ng of the Centre that w i l l both take into account the needs of the local c ommu n i ty in H o n g K o n g and meet the requirements of social science research in the Un i v e r s i t y. M o r e specifically, the Comm i t t ee is (1) to receive and discuss semi-annual reports f r om the Centre on its wo rk and (2) to give assistance, as far as possible, to the Centre in such matters relating to its wo rk as it may p ut before the Comm i t t ee f r om t i me to time. T h e resolution reads:— Resolved: That this hoard of Trustees of the Yale- in-China Association record its sense of enthusiasm and gratification that The Chinese University of Hong Kong has come into being; that the Faculties and Governing Bodies of Chung Chi College’ New Asia College and United College have agreed to unite in this significant venture in higher education; and that the government of the Colony has adopted the necessary enabling legislation and is committing substantial funds to make the new University a reality; Further Resolved: That this Board, recognizing that its members and the members of the Yale-in- China Association are, for the most part, graduates of Yale University and therefore have abiding interest in the aims, functions and opportunities of a university, unanimously commits itself to a fundamental allegiance to the new Chinese University and encourages constructive and mutually beneficial programs involving both institutions ; 3
