and later graduated from Yenching University, Peiping w ith B .A . (1935) and M .A . (1938) degrees in History. A fte r his graduation, he first worked as the Assistant L ibrarian o f Yenching University, in charge o f the section o f Japanese Studies and later as a Research-fellow of the Harvard-Yenching In stitute under D r. T o rii Ryuzo, Visiting Professor, spending most of his time in archaeological work in Shangtung, Manchuria and Inner-Mongolia, from 1939 to 1941. A fte r the Second World War, M r. L iu joined the Hong Kong Government in 1947 and was given a lecturership in Northcote Training College (now Northcote College of Education). In 1954, he was promoted to the rank of Education Officer, con currently taking up the post o f Organizer of the In - Service Course of Training fo r Teachers, Hong Kong. He was awarded a scholarship in 1956 to study at the University of London Institute of Education. Returning to Hong Kong in 1957, he joined the Northcote Training College again, as Senior Lecturer, and had charge of the One-Year Course until March 1965, when he was appointed the Principal o f Yuen Long Public M iddle School. Promoted to the rank of Senior Education Officer in 1967 , he was appointed concurrently as Prin cipals o f two Government M iddle Schools, the N .T. Heung Yee Kuk Yuen Long D istrict Secondary School and Yuen Long Public M iddle School. During the period from 1965 to 1968, M r. L iu was Chairman of the Yuen Long D istrict A rts Committee, the N .T . Schools Sports Association (Yuen Long Branch) and Boy Scouts Association of Yuen Long D istrict. He has served as a D irector of School Advisory Boards fo r the Methodist Col lege, Methodist Church North Point Primary School and Pui Y ing M iddle School up to the present time. He retired from Government Service in Sep tember 1968 and was appointed Assistant Registrar of the University, in the field o f academic studies. M r . Chu Pak-sun, born in Shanghai, studied at Lingnan M iddle School, Canton, and completed his B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering at Ta i Tung University, Shanghai. M r. Chu has been connected w ith the Shang hai Power Company, Canton Electric Works, Cable and Wireless Ltd., Hong Kong, the Architectural Office of the Government Public Works Depart ment, Hong Kong, and E ric Cumine Associates. He joined the University as Assistant Buildings Officer in August 1968. COLLEGE NEWS • There have been some changes in the mem bership o f the Board of Trustees of United College. Miss Ko Siu-wah , General Secretary to the Young Women's Christian Association, now represents the Hong Kong Council o f Social Service on the Board in place of the Very Rev. John Foster; and M r. Wong Wan-tin. • On 28th September, New Asia College cele brated Confucius’ Birthday and the 19th Anniver sary of the Founders' Day of the College. Members o f the College Board, the staff, alumni and students attended a Ceremony at which addresses were given by the President, Dr. T.C. Ou, Dr. Shen Y i (repre senting the Board ), Dr. F.S. Hutchins (representing the Yale-in-China Association), Dean Pan Chung- kwei (representing the teaching staff), M r. Hsia Yan- san (representing the A lum n i Association) and M r. Yau Ying-hung (representing the Student Union). The same evening, the Student Union held a cele bration. • On 13th September, New Asia College held its 106th Monthly Meeting. A t this first Assembly fo r the Autumn Term, President Ou gave a brief talk on College affairs, which was followed by reports from D r. Daniel Y . Chang, Acting Dean of Studies; M r. Tao Chen-yu, Dean o f Students; and M r. C.L. Yuan, Comptroller. The Acting Dean o f Studies also presented the new staff to the Assembly. • Dr. Yang Yu-mei, Senior Lecturer and concur rently Head of the Accounting and Finance Depart ment in New Asia College, who had devoted him self to the teaching and administrative work of the College since it was founded, retired on 1st Octo ber. He is particularly noted fo r his contributions to the College in establishing its account system, in launching its Faculty o f Commerce, and in paving the way fo r the establishment of The Chinese U n i versity. — 6 —
