• A Student Part-time Employment Service has been launched by the Student Union o f New Asia College, fo r the purpose of providing needy students w ith opportunities of employment on a part-time basis. The Student Welfare Survey and Implemen­ tation Committee of the Union, which is in charge of the Service, has sent out letters to large business organizations in Hong Kong to seek support fo r the project. The Committee also keeps close contact w ith various departments of the College to enquire about possibilities of employment. Prof. Chang Li-sheng, former President of Kiangnan University, was invited by the Christian Fellowship o f New Asia College to give a talk on "C u ltu ra l Crisis and Renaissance". • On 19th September, at the invitation o f the Chinese Literature Department o f New Asia College, M r. Wang Teh-chao, Lecturer in H istory o f the College, gave a ta lk on "Huang Tsun-hsien and Liang Chi-ch'ao". • On 26th September the Department o f Socio logy and Social W o rk of Chung Chi College held its first monthly technical discussion, on "Change in Power Structure o f Six Hakka Villages in the New Territories of Hong Kong". • In anticipation of the seminar on "Leisure Activities of Youth in Hong Kong " to be held in mid- October, the Sociology and Social Work Society of United College held a prelim inary panel discussion at the College H a ll on 27th September. Panel members were M r. Peter Ng, C ity D istrict Officer (Western); M r. Peter Tsang, Field Secretary o f the Federation of Youth Groups of Hong Kong; Mr. W illiam T.C. Cheung, Chairman of Youth Section, Hong Kong and Kow loon Joint Kaifong Research Council; and Mrs. Eva L i Ko, Head of the Social Work Department of the College. Over 100 stud ents participated in the discussion. • D r. Paul Newman, Lecturer and Chairman of the Department of Philosophy and Religion at Chung Chi College, attended the Consultation on Peace in Asia held in Japan from 16th to 26th September as a representative of the United Church o f Canada. • A t the invitation of the Hong Kong Manage ment Association, Dr. Sutu Hsin, Head of the Business Management Department, United College, attended the IPCCIOS I I I Conference (Indo-Pacific Committee of the International Council fo r Scientific Management) held from 1st to 5th October at the C ity Hall. D r. Sutu served as the Session Chair man fo r the Forum on "Labour Motivation and Reward" and was the Prime Speaker fo r Hong Kong on "Smaller Business Development" at the In te r national Conference. • Miss La i Fung-wai, a 1968 graduate o f the Chinese Literature Department o f New Asia College, has been selected by the M in istry of Education of Japan fo r the award of a Fellowship fo r advanced studies, tenable fo r one and a half years. Miss La i w ill spend half a year in Waseda University learning the Japanese language, and w ill afterwards enter Tokyo University to study International Relations fo r one year. • The “ Rules governing the Exam ination fo r Selection o f Candidates fo r Fellowships fo r Studies in Japan fo r 1969/70 " were announced by the In stitute o f Advanced Chinese Studies and Research o f New Asia College on 19th September. The Exam ination w ill be open to both graduates and present Trainees o f the Institute. Successful can didates w ill be sent to a university in Japan fo r further studies. This Programme, financed by the Harvard-Yenching Institute of the United States, has so far provided fellowships fo r two students to do graduate work in Japan. One o f them is at Kyoto University, Japan, while the other, after a period of study in Japan, has now been admitted to Harvard University. Both are working toward doctoral degrees. • The results of the Entrance Examination of the Institute o f Advanced Chinese Studies and Research of New Asia College were announced on 18th September. Nine candidates were admitted as Research Trainees and one was admitted as proba tionary Research Trainee. Three o f the Trainees were granted scholarships. • On 11th September, New Asia College an nounced the appointment of Class/Departmental Advisers to students fo r 1968/69. There are al together 59 Advisers. On 17th September, President T .C. Ou invit ed all first-year students to a tea to enable them to meet their Advisers and to explain to them the meaning o f the Tutorial (Advisory) System. • The tenth issue o f the N e w A s i a College A c a dem i c A n n u a l , comprising both English and Chinese articles, came out on 28th September, the Founders' Day o f the College. The A n n u a l carries articles on literature, history, philosophy, science, and econom ics. Other recent publications o f the College are: N e w A s i a J ou r na l Vo l. 8 No. 2, published by the Institute o f Advanced Chinese Studies and Research; A n n u a l J ou r na l o f the Chinese L i t e r a t u r e Department No. 6; and H i s t o r y Magazi ne. • M r. Kwan Kwok-yin and M r. Chen Tong-ting resigned from their posts as Demonstrators in the Departments o f Mathematics and Biology of New Asia College respectively in late September. They are leaving fo r America fo r advanced studies. M r. Kwan w ill enter Oregon University on a Yale-in- China Fellowship while M r. Chen w ill do graduate work at A tlanta University. — 7 —
