• The Staff Association o f United College held its Annual General Meeting on 24th September. Mrs. Eva L i Ko, Head o f the Social W o rk Depart ment, and M r. Andrew Chan, Adm inistrative Assis tant, were elected Chairman and Vice-Chairman respectively fo r the 1968-69 year. The Staff Association o f New Asia College elected a new Executive Committee on 28th Sep tember. M r. C .L. Yuan was re-elected Chairman; and M r. John T.S. Chen was elected Vice-Chair man. On 2nd October M r. Donald P. McComb and Dr. Philip Fu were elected Chairman and Vice-Chair man respectively of the Staff Club of Chung Chi College fo r 1968-69. • The Rev. F ranklin Woo has been appointed by the Board of Governors of Chung Chi College as College Chaplain fo r the year 1968-69 in place of the Rev. W .H. Tonge, who is on leave. • M r. Aaron Lee, D irector of Physical Educa tion at Chung Chi College, has been elected Chair man of the Hong Kong Post-Secondary Colleges A thletic Association fo r 1968-1969. • Dr. Sutu Hsin, Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Business Management, United College, has been appointed a Member of the Hong Kong Productivity Council fo r a period o f four months w ith effect from 20th September, 1968. • A coloured film entitled “ The Years o f Study in Germany" was shown by the Modern Languages Society of United College on 18th September. P rior to its screening D r. Uve C. Fischer, V isiting Lec turer in German Studies, gave a short introductory ta lk on the difference between German and Hong Kong universities. COMINGS AND GOINGS • A seminar on "Community Service in the University Curriculum ", conducted by M r. Alec Dickson, Head of Community Service Volunteers and founder of Voluntary Service Overseas in Britain, was held in the University Confer ence Room on 4th October fo r administrative staff dealing w ith student welfare and teaching staff of the Departments o f Sociology and Social Work. M r. and Mrs. Dickson visited the Colony from 26th September to 15th October. Other visitors to the University during the past month include Dr. J.F. Foster, Secretary-General of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, and Mrs. Foster; Dr. D.N. Chester, Professor of Government and Public Adm inistration at Oxford and Warden of Nuffield College, Oxford; M r. David Finkelstein o f the Headquarters o f Ford Founda tion, and M r. Richard Dye, Head of the Ford Foundation Office in Kuala Lumpur; Professor Louise L . Tyler, Associate Professor of Education, University of California (Los Angeles); D r. & Mrs. J.A. Corry o f Queen's University, Ontario, Canada; Professor S. La-Anyane, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ghana; and Prof. K .A J . Nyarko, Vice-Principal of University College, Cape Coast. • Dr. K .L . Kwok, Lecturer in Physics and Elec tronics of United College, attended the A rno ld Som merfeld Centennial Memorial Meeting held in Munich on 9th and 10th September and the In te r national Symposium on the Physics of One- and Two-Electron Atoms held in conjunction w ith the Memorial Meeting from 10th to 14th September. A t the meeting he read a paper entitled "Variational Scattering Amptitude in e-H Collisions", which has been accepted by the International Symposium. • M r. Raymund Adams, Head of the Lecturer Affairs Section, German Academic Exchange Service (D A A D ) visited United College on 14th September. He was accompanied by D r. Eva Lindemann, Consul of German Consulate General, Hong Kong. They were met by President T.C. Cheng; Academic Registrar N. H. Young; Professor S.S. Hsueh, Chairman of the University Inter- D isciplinary Committee on French, German and Japanese; Dr. Uve C. Fischer, V isiting Lecturer in German Studies and other senior College Staff. • Monsieur Claude Clement, the new Cultural A ffairs Attache to the French Consulate General in Hong Kong, visited United College in September. He discussed w ith President T.C. Cheng and other senior staff the promotion o f French studies and other cultural activities. M . Clement also visited New Asia College w ith Prof. Y . Hervouet, Professor of Chinese Literature, Bordeau University in France. • M r. Lung Yu-chun, Lecturer in Chinese at Chung Chi College, left on 27th September fo r Taiwan on long leave. He w ill return to the College in August J969. • Dr. Chao Chuan-ying, Senior Lecturer in Biology at New Asia College, returned to the College in early October. He had spent six months at the University of California in research. • On 18th October, Prof. T.S. Ma of the State University of New Y o rk gave a ta lk on “ Science Education and Scientific Research in the United States” at New Asia College. Prof. M a had visited the College on 9th October and exchanged views w ith its teaching staff on science equipment. — 8 —
