Upon graduation he was drafted by the government to serve in the army. After the war he served for many years i n governmental economic development agencies until 1963. I n 1958 Mr . L i was awarded a full scholarship by the Ministry of Education to pursue further studies for two years in the United States, where he obtained his M. A. degree from the University of Oregon. He did research work at the University of Rochester for one year. In 1964 Mr. L i went to the University of Michigan to read for an M. B . A. degree under the technical assistance programme of the National Chengchi University. Mr. L i has taken up teaching since 1963 and has taught at Soochow University and National Chengchi University, first as associate professor and then as professor. He is now B.Y. Lam Foundation Lecturer at the Lingnan Institute of Business Administration of the University. COMINGS AND GOINGS • The Rt. Honourable Lord Shepherd, Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, United Kingdom, visited the University on 4th June. Other visitors to the University in the months of May and June included Dr. A . H. Baghdadi, Rector of Alexandri a University; the delegation of the Chamber of Chinese Traders (U . K .) Ltd.; Dr. William B. Cook , Dean of the College of Natural Science, Colorado State University; Prof. Wu-Chung Hsiang, Professor of Mathematics at Yale University, who visited New Asia College and United College; Dr. M . Mursi, Rector of Cairo University; and Dr. Cho-Yee To, Assistant Professor at the School of Education, Universit y of Michigan, who visited the School of Education and United College. • Mr. John T. Ma, Curator-Librarian of the East Asian Collection of the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, visited New Asia College on 4th May. • Miss Shim Chi-sun, Dean of Women at Yonsei University, Korea, visite d Chung Chi College, United College and the Central Office of the University in May. She was on a tour of universities and educational institutions in Asian countries. • Visitors to United College during the months of May and June included Dr. C. Wecker, Deputy Director of the Goethe Institut, and Dr. D. Kreplin, Director of the Hong Kong Branch of the Goethe Institut; Mr. D. Stuckenschmidt, an officer of the German Academic Exchang e Service in charge of the Visiting Scholars and Scholarships Program for the Far East; and Dr. Y.T. Shen, President-designate of New Asia College. • Dr. Toshichika Totoki, Visiting Professor of Japanology at Chung Chi College, and Miss Christine Littler, Tutor i n Mathematics, also of Chung Chi, have left Hong Kong on completion of their terms of service. • Mr. Chong Kwok-kei, Demonstrator in Mathematics, and Mr. Chow Chun-kau, Part-time Demonstrator in Physics and Electronics, United College, left fo r West Germany in mid-June to pursue higher studies in German universities on scholarships awarded b y the German Academic Exchange Service. • Prof. David H. Li, Director of the Lingnan Institute of Business Administration of the University, was invited by Mr. John J. O'Neil, Jr., Director of Market Promotion, U.S. Department of Commerce, Washington D.C. , to attend the Data Processing Exhibition and Seminar in Bangkok from 23rd to 27th June, 1969. • Prof. S.S. Hsueh, Professor of Government and Public Administration assigned to United College, left on 28th June for Seoul, Korea, to deliver two lectures and to participate in panel sessions in a regional course on administration of foreign relations i n Asia co-sponsored by the Government of the Republic of Korea and the Eastern Regional Organizatio n for Public Administration. Prof. Hsueh will also co-ordinate with the Korean participants in their preparations for the Asian Workshop on Higher Education to be held in Hong Kong. He is expected to return in August. • Dr. S.C. Loll, Reader in Electronics assigned to United College and Director of the Computing Centre of the University, left Hong Kong in June on a two-month trip to the United Kingdom to visit computing centres there. COLLEGE NEWS • The Board of Governors of New Asia College has announced the appointment of three new members effective fro m May this year: Mr. Henry M. Sperry, Executive Director, American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong; Mr. Peter G. Williams, Director, Dodwell & Co., Ltd.; and Mr. T.Y. Wong, Chairman and Managin g Director, Hong Kong Spinners Ltd. 9
