• On 14th July New Asia College celebrated the 18th Graduation of its Undergraduate Departments and the 13th Graduation of its Research Institute. Presiding over the Ceremony, Dr. the Hon. P.Y. Tang, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the College, began his address by introducing Dr. Y . T. Shen, new College President. He then announced that to mark its 20th Anniversary, the College was organizing a variety of celebrations which would last three months beginning from the end of September. He further revealed that the College would also be launching a development fund raising campaign. President Shen then reported on College affairs and distributed diplomas. This was followed by a valedictory and the presentation of souvenirs by the representative of the graduands. • Mr. C.C. Hu, Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Sociology, and Mr. K.K. Ng, Bursar, United College, who will retire in October 1969, were presented with souvenirs at a short ceremony held at the Mandarin Hotel on 31st July in the presence of members of the College Board of Trustees. Dr. the Hon. Fung Ping-Fan, Chairman of the Board, who presented the souvenirs, spoke of the long and loyal services Mr. Hu and Mr. Ng had rendered to the College and wished them a happy and long retirement, • Dr. P.H. Chang, Senior Lecturer in the English Department of New Asia College, retired on 1st August. Dr. Chang had been teaching in New Asia since February 1955, and had served as Dean of the Institute of Advanced Chinese Studies and Research of the College; Head of the English Department; and Dean of the Faculty of Arts. He had also served twice as Acting President for short periods during the absence of Dr. Ou Tsuin-chen, former President of the College. • New Asia College has announce d the appointment of the following new College faculty dean and department heads with effect from 1st August, 1969: Dr. L in S. Chiao, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Social Science; Mr. Mou Tsung-san, Head of the Philosophy Department; Dr. Phillip Sun, Head of the English Language & Literature Department ; Mr. Wu Chen-hsiung, Head of the Economics Department; and Dr. Y . Y. Lee, Head of the Physics Department. • Dr. Philip Sun, Lecturer in the English Department of New Asia College, has been promoted Senior Lecturer as of 1st August. Dr. Sun went to the United States on long leave two years ago and assumed a teaching post at Ohio University. He was later granted special leave by New Asia College for a period up to July this year. He has now been appointed Head of the English Department of the College. • Prof. Huang Wen-shan assumed duty as Visiting Professor of Sociology at New Asia College on 28th August. Prof. Huang is a leading sociologist and the President of the American Academy of Chinese Culture. He will teach courses in "Culturology" at the College. • Mr. Sun Kuo-tung (Head of the History Department), Miss Wang Hsing-yong (Lecturer in Mathematics), and Dr. Yunshen Bau (Lecturer in Chemistry) of New Asia College, have resumed duty after a year's absence. • The Williams-in-Hong Kong Summer School Programme at United College began its intensive English course for teachers of English from local secondary and primary schools on 21st July. Attending the course were 129 teachers who had been divided into six groups according to their proficiency in English. The one-month course was conducted by six graduates and seniors of Williams College, Massachusetts, who arrive in Hong Kong early in July. • As in previous years, Stanford University, through the voluntary services of three of its graduates, conducted a Summer Oral English Course at United College from 14th July to 15th August. About 150 2nd-, 3rd- and 4th-year students of the College attended the course. • This year's four-week Summer Mandarin Course of the New Asia Yale-in-China Chinese Language Center for in-coming first-year students began on 4th August. A total of 131 students enrolled, including freshmen of the three Foundation Colleges and Japanese exchange students. • The four-week Summer Intensive English Course of New Asia College came to a close on 30th August. This course was designed to help new students to develop better English reading habits. A total of 99 students took the course this year. • A Summer Art Course, offered by the Fine Arts Department of New Asia College, started on 18th July with an enrolment of 85. — 1 3 —
