• A t the Biology Seminar sponsored by the Department of Biology, Chung Chi College, two lectures, one at New Asia College and one at Chung Chi College, were given on 3rd and 10th April. Dr. S.T. Chang, Senior Lecturer in Biology, Chung Chi College, gave a talk on "An Electro n Microscopy Study of Complex Membran e System in the Germinating Spore of Volvariella volvacea Following a New Embedding Method". The second lecture was given by Dr. David P.M. Guile, Plant Ecologist and Phytogeographer, on "Plants of Northern Japan" . •At the invitation of the United College Student Union, the Hon. Q.W. Lee , Member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong and Treasurer of the University, gave a talk on the Government Budget in the College Hall on 13th April. He dwelt at some length on the reasons why Government preferred a surplus budget to a deficit one, and why there was a big surplus in the year ended 31st March, 1970. Controversial issues such as the pros and cons of compulsory primary education in Hong Kong were also discussed. • A public lecture on "Laotian War", sponsored by the Current Affairs Committee of th e Student Union of Chung Chi College, was held in the Student Lounge of the College on 14th April. The speaker was Mr. Peter Kumpa, Senior Correspondent of the Baltimore Sun, U.S.A. • A special lecture, sponsored by the Theology Division, Philosophy and Religion Department of Chung Chi College, was given by Dr. Paul Schilling, Professor of Systematic Theology, Boston University, on 14th Ap r il in the conference room of the Theology Building, Chung Chi College. The subjec t of the lecture was "God in an Age of Atheism". • A t an invitation by the Faculty of Commerce and Social Science of New Asia College, Professor Franklin E. Folts of Harvard University, U.S.A., gave a talk on "Management as a Profession" on 15th Ap r i l. The talk was the sixth in the series of lectures in Social Science organized by the Faculty in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the College. • Professor Chen Cheng-siang, Professor of Geography assigned to United College, has been invited to be a member of the Board of Editors of Geoforum (Journal of Physical, Human and Regional Geo-Sciences). A t the 21st Congress of the International Geographical Union, the world's leading geographers felt the need for a comprehensive, independent and truly international geographical journal, and resolved after detailed discussion to publish a quarterly entitled Geoforum, which should cover physical, human and regional geo-sciences. A Board of Editors of internationally renowned geographers including eleven Europeans, three Asians, four Americans and one Russian, was constituted. Prof. Chen is one of the three editor s from Asia. Other editors include Prof. C. Troll of the University of Bonn, Germany, and former President of the International Geographical Union; Prof. C D. Harris of the University of Chicago, U.S.A., and Secretary General to the International Geographical Union; Prof. LP. Gerasimor of Moscow University, U.S.S.R. and Vice-President of International Geographical Union; and Prof. T. Nakano of Tokyo University, Japan. The first issue of the quarterly has come out and already won internationa l acclaim. • Mrs. Aline K. Wong, Lecturer and Head of the Department of Sociology, United College, has obtained the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology in March 1970 from the University of California, Berkeley. • Mr. Chang Chien-Min, Lecturer in Business Management, assumed duty as Deputy Head of the Department of Business Management at United College from 3rd March. • The Staff Association of New Asia College has appointed Mr . Sun Kuo-tung to succeed Mr. John T.S. Chen as Chairman of the Association. Mr . Chen resigned from the post on 8th April. • Mr. Brian Blomfield, Lecturer in English, Chung Chi College, has been appointed by Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London, as the Hong Kong representative for the School's Examinations in Spoken English , Public Speaking, Speech and Drama. • Mr. John Tardino, Jr., a tutor in the English Department of New Asia College, held a Personal A r t Exhibition in the College from 28th March to 4th Ap r i l. Works displayed included paintings and sculptures. • A Volley Ball Team from the National Normal College, Taiwan, visited New Asia College on 11th March, and played a demonstration game for its students. The Girls' Basketball Team of Tam Kang College of Arts and Science, Taiwan, visited the College on 12th March. — 1 0 —
