L I B A News By strengthening the whole programme of the Institute and broadening the base of student enrolment, the Lingnan Institute of Business Administration of the University has attracted 76 applications for admission this year, an increase of approximately 70% over last year's figure. The number of new students has increased from 12 in 1969 to 21 in 1970, bringing a total of 33 students to the Institute. This year, students admitted to the Institute have various academic backgrounds, including not only graduates in economics or commerce but also those in natural sciences and engineering. It is believed that the optimum mixture of students' academic backgrounds and experience will provide opportunity for interchange of ideas and will consequently increase L I BA 's contribution to the local community. Wi th the increase in student enrolment, the Institute has been endeavouring to recruit permanent staff members to teach on a minimum two-year basis in order to provide continuity in its programme of studies. Cheng Miss Sun Nan In the present academic year, curricula have been designed to enable students with various backgrounds to make up their basic courses and to complete their studies leading to the degree of Master of Business Administration in a minimum of two years. Some of the first-year students are required to attend basic courses conducted at the Foundation Colleges. I n an attempt to pool the available manpower of the three Colleges and the Institute, third - and fourth-year students of the Foundation Colleges are also permitted to attend some of the courses offered by the Institute. Eight students of the Institute were placed to work in summer assignments for a period of eight to eleven weeks to provide them with opportunities to gain practical experience and to enable them to have an insight into local business problems and operations. Besides serving as financial aid to students, the summer employment advances their actual knowledge of management. Students have to submit a report after they have completed their summer work. The public has demonstrated its interest in the work of the Institute by rendering assistance in various ways including generous financial support from local and international organizations and individuals During the academic year 1970/71, 8 students have been awarded scholarships donated by a number of industrial, trade and other organizations, and 16 have received bursaries each amounting to HK$3,000 or HK$3,800. Professors' Pro f i l es Prof. An-Min Chung, Visiting Professor, Lingnan Institute of Business Administration Dr. An -M in Chung came to the Lingnan Institute of Business Administration in September 1970 and conducts courses in Operations Research and Management Decision Analysis. Prof. Chung is a 1943 graduate of the wartime National Southwest Associated University in Kunming, China, where he majored in Electrical Engineering. After the Second World War he attended the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce, University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, and received his M.B.A. in Industrial Management in 1949. He earned his doctorate in Economic Theory at the same institution in 1953 after completing the dissertation entitled, “The Development of the Modern Manufacturing Industry in China, 1929-1949". Dr. Chung has taught at Drexel University, Carnegie Institute of Technology (now the Carnegie- Mellon University), and Haverford College, Haverford, Pa. He is the author of a book entitled Linear Programming, and has lectured extensivel y on that subject to groups of executives, industrial and government staff, and professional engineers. He is currently engaged in applying operations research techniques to the study of air pollution control problems. Prof. Chung is a member of many professional societies, including the American Economic Association and the Institute of Management Sciences, and was elected in 1958 a member of the National Honor — 4 —
