Bulletin Vol. 7 No. 3 Nov 1970

M a r y k n o l l a n d J e s u i t S t u d e n t H o s t e l , U n i t e d C o l l e g e Thanks to the generosity of two Roman Catholic orders in Hong Kong, a students, hall of residence is taking shape in Shatin on the site of United College of the University. The two Roman Catholic orders concerned are the Society of Jesus and the Convent of the Maryknoll Sisters. They are jointly contributing half of the costs of construction and furnishing for this hostel while the other half comes from Government subvention and College funds. As the building costs in Hong Kong have soared in recent years, the total cost of the hostel may well be over HK$4,000,000 when it is completed. The Maryknoll-Jesuit Hall of Residence will be a 4-storey structure, with a usable area of 41,000 sq. ft. It consists of a residential block for men and another for women students. The two blocks together will contain 124 double rooms and 2 single rooms for students as well as quarters for wardens and offices for their staff. In addition, there will be common rooms, reading rooms, music and game rooms, a simple snack kitchen, laundry and other areas essential to the proper functioning of the hostel. Construction of the hostel began shortly after the signing of the building contracts on 17th September, 1970. The Very Rev. Fr. F. Cronin, S.J ., and Rev. Sister Katherine Byrne represented the Jesuit Fathers and the Maryknoll Sisters respectively. Work has been progressing satisfactorily since then. Completion is scheduled for the autumn of 1971, in time for occupancy by the beginning of the 1971-72 academic year. This hostel is significant not only because it represents the first step United College is taking to become a partially-residential College, but also because it is another gesture of the community's support for the development of The Chinese University.
