Berkley — Assistant Lecturer in English, New Asia College STAFF PROFILES Dr. Liu Shu-hsien, Lecturer in Philosophy, New Asia College Born in Shanghai, Dr. Liu Shu-hsien went to Taiwan in 1949 and graduated from National Taiwan University in 1955 with a B.A. degree in Philosophy, One year later he entered the Graduate School of National Taiwan University and received an M.A. degree in Philosophy in 1958. From 1958 to 1964, he taught philosophy and humanities at Tunghai University, first as a Lecturer and later as an Associate Professor. He went to study at Southern Illinois University and obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1966. Upon completion of his studies, he was appointed by the University of Southern Illinois as Assistant Professor of Philosophy and later was promoted Associate Professor. He accepted the appointment at New Asia College in 1971. Dr. Liu's publications include the following books: The Appreciation of Literature from a Philosophical Point of View, Semantics and Truth, New Philosophical Methods and Convictions in a Changing World and An Introduction to the Philosophy of Culture. Dr. Shum Kar-ping, Lecturer in Mathematics, Chung Chi College After graduation from the Hong Kong Baptist College, Dr. Shum Kar-ping studied Mathematics a t the University of Leeds and obtained an M.Sc. degree. Later he took up advanced studies in Canada and received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Alberta. While studying, Dr. Shum also taught Mathematics at two universities. Dr. Shum is a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Canadian Mathematical Congress. He has written a number of articles and is the co-author of the following papers: ‘‘Remarks on finite topological spaces", “O n algebraic radicals in mobs", and "On nilpotent elements of semigroups" published in the Colloqium Mathematicum. Dr. Shum accepted an appointment at Chung Chi College in 1971. Mr. Chan Yiu-mo, Physical Education Instructor, United College Mr. Chan Yiu-mo studied Physical Education at the Taiwan Physical Education College and received a diploma from the College in 1964. Since 1965 he has been engaged in receiving gymnastic, football and basketball training. Very active in the local athletic circle, Mr. Chan was Chairman of the Hong Kong Volleyball Reference Association from 1969 to 1971 and is holding a number of positions in various athletic associations. Mr. Chan was Physical Education Director of New Method College before assuming duties as Physical Education Instructor at United College in 1971. Pelzel, Director of the Harvard- Yenching Institute, the United States, visited the Institute of Advanced Chinese Studies and Research of New Asia College on 5th January. • Mr. D.J.G. Holroyde, Director of Television Services at the University of Leeds, and Mr. H.A. Kemhadjian, Senior Lecturer in Electronics at the University o f Southampton, arrived in Hong Kong in the middle of January under the sponsorship of the Inter- University Council for Higher Education Overseas. Mr. Holroyde will advise the University of Hong Kong and this University on audio-visual education. Mr. Kem- hadjian will advise the University on the Electronics programme. - 7 -
