diseases prevalent in Hong Kong, have been success fu lly researched into by doctors in the unit. For example, recurrent pyogenic cholangitis caused by stones in the bile ducts can now be removed by a new endoscopic technique w ithout resorting to open surgery. Another technique they pioneered is the injection o f haemostatic agents to stop bleeding from peptic ulcers, a very common disease in Hong Kong. International Colloquium on Chinese Music The Chinese Music Archive o f the Department o f Music co-organized an International Colloquium on Chinese Music w ith the Society o f Ethnomusicological Research in Hong Kong, to celebrate the 25th anni versary of The Chinese University o f Hong Kong and to promote the study o f Chinese music and ethno musicology. The colloquium lasted three days from 28th December, 1988. Scholars from Mainland China, Taiwan and the United States, together w ith four faculty members from the Chinese Music Archive, presented a total o f about th irty papers and exchanged ideas on their latest research findings. Participants o f the colloquium included some o f the most active scholars in Chinese music, such as Rulan Chao Pian o f Harvard University, David Liang o f the University o f Maryland at Baltimore County, Bell Yung o f the University o f Pittsburgh, Hsu Tsang-Houei o f National Taiwan Normal University and Xia Ye o f Shanghai Conservatory o f Music. The colloquium was conducted in five sessions w ith various themes. The Fourth Scientific Meeting of the Pacific Rim College of Psychiatrists The Pacific Rim College o f Psychiatrists held its fourth Scientific Meeting, which was organized by the University's Department o f Psychiatry, from 5th to 8th December, 1988 at the Sheraton Hotel. Nearly 300, and many o f them senior academic psychiatrists participated in this meeting. Professor Charles K. Kao , Vice-Chancellor o f the University, officiated at the opening ceremony and addressed the gathering o f fellows and members o f the Pacific Rim College o f Psychiatrists.
