Cultural Events * The Department o f Chemistry organized the following seminars: — 'Conformational Analysis by Combined Use o f NMR and CD Spectroscopy' conducted by Professor Jan Sandstrom, Chemical Centre, University o f Lund, Sweden, on 24th October , 1988. — ‘Aggregation and Hairpin-looping Coag gregating Tendencies o f the Culprits o f Arteriosclerosis, Triglyeerides and Cholesterols', conducted by Professor Jiang X ikui o f the Shanghai Institute o f Organic Chemistry, Academia Sinica, China, on 18th November. — ‘Monte-Carlo Calculations o f lon-dipole Mixtures' conducted by Dr. Kwong-yu Chan, Department o f Chemistry, the Univer sity o f Hong Kong, on 9th November. — ‘Electron Spectroscopies and Surface Science' conducted by Professor Peter C.T. Au, Department o f Chemistry, Xiamen Univer sity, China, on 19th December. The seminar was jo in tly organized w ith the Department o f Physics. * The Institute o f Chinese Studies and the Depart ment o f History jo in tly presented the following lec tures: — ‘On Feudal Imperial Power' by Professor Zhu Zongbin o f the Department o f History, Peking University, on 21st October. — 'On Scientific , Technological and Cultural Development in the Region o f Sichuan during the Song Period' by Professor Hu Zhaoxi o f the Department o f History, Sichuan University, on 27th October. * The Institute o f Chinese Studies presented a lecture on 24th October on ‘Several Issues o f Pre historic Archaeology in the Yellow River Valley'. The speaker was Professor Zhang Zhongpei, director , The Palace Museum, Beijing. * The Department o f History presented a K.C. Wong Lecture on 26th October. Professor Zhu Zhongbin o f the Department o f History, Peking University, spoke on 'The Cabinet Offices o f the Han, Wei, Chin and Southern and Northern Dynasties'. * Two renowned scholars visited New Asia College as its Ming Yu Visiting Fellows in November: 一 Professor X i Tong-geng, deputy director o f Shanghai Institute o f Ceramics, Academia Sinica, and vice-president o f Thermophysical Property Committee, Chinese Society for Measurement, visited the College from 6th to 12th November and gave a lecture on 11th November entitled 'Thermal Physics Studies o f Space Vehicles in China'. — Professor Maurice Block, professor o f an thropology, the School o f Economics and Political Science, University o f London, visited the College from 14th to 20th Novem ber and delivered a speech on 18th Novem ber on 'Religion in the Idiom o f Violence'. * The faculty and departmental societies o f the University Student Union staged a 25th Anniversary Exhibition at the University Mall in the afternoon o f 12th November. The purpose o f the exhibition was to inform the public o f activities at the University and it included a wide variety o f organized pro grammes on campus. Among these were departmental exhibitions, slide presentations, and drama and dance performances by students. The opening ceremony was officiated by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Charles K. Kao. * The United College invited Professor Robin M. Norris to pay a two-week visit, from 18th November to 1st December, to the College as its 1988-89 Distin guished Visiting Scholar. Professor Norris is an inter national fellow o f the Council on Clinical Cardiology o f the American Heart Association, physician-in- charge o f the Coronary Care Unit, Green Lane Hospital, New Zealand, tenured investigator for the Medical Research Council, New Zealand, and honorary professor o f cardiovascular therapeutics at the Univer sity o f Auckland, New Zealand. During his visit, Professor Norris gave three lec tures: — 'Coronary Heart Disease: A Changing Per spective', on 21st November; — 'Acute Myocardial Infarction: A Disease o f the Twentieth Century', on 22nd November; and 18
