Chancellors Speech at the Anniversary Dinner The f o llo w in g is the te x t o f the speech by his E x cellency the Governor , Chancellor o f the University , a t the 25 th anniversary dinner o f the University on 7th October , 1988: This is the first time that I have had the oppor tunity as Chancellor o f the University to perform the pleasant duty o f hosting a banquet in honour o f hon orary graduates. Tonight o f course there is another cause for celebration. We are also commemorating the 25th anniversary o f the University. My wife and I are delighted to be able to share this memorable occasion w ith such a distinguished company o f Council members, staff, alumni and guests o f the University. The amalgamation in 1963 o f three post- secondary colleges to constitute The Chinese Univer sity o f Hong Kong was a positive response by the Government towards meeting an increasing demand for higher education opportunities in Hong Kong. It was also an innovative attempt to establish auniver sity that combines a Chinese cultural heritage, an international outlook, and a keen interest in the local community. The phenomenal growth o f the University in the past twenty-five years is a reflection o f the re markable progress made in higher education in Hong Kong. This University has already produced more than 20,000 graduates. Its student population today is five times as large as it was in 1963. A fourth college, Shaw College, has now been established. New degree courses in business administration, medi cine, education and electronics have been added to broaden the original emphasis on arts and science. The University has also successfully launched the first part-time degree courses in Hong Kong to cater to the educational needs o f working adults. Hong Kong is a small place. We have few natural resources. But we have excellent human resources. We must use —and train them —to the fu ll. That is 5
