Christians worldwide, visited the University and Chung Chi College in November 1996. At the invitation of the Theology Division, Patriarch Bartholomew gave a lecture on 'An Eastern Orthodox Response to Contemporary Issues' at the Cho Yiu Conference Hall on 5th November. He also met Prof. Arthur Li, vice-chancellor of the University, and Prof. Rance Lee, head of Chung Chi College, who introduced him to the Christian tradition of the college. The 56-year-old Patriarch and his entourage were on a three-day pastoral visit to Hong Kong, the first such visit by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Istanbul. The objective was to communicate with the members of the church as well as with local authorities and residents who 'contribute most effectively i n shaping the present and future' of the territory. During his visit, he also formally established the Metropolitanate of Hong Kong and Southeast Asia. Wei L un Lectures * Prof. Alan C. Walker, professor of social policy at the University of Sheffield, UK, gave a lecture on 'Welfare States in Transition: A Political Economy of Social Policy in Western Europe' on 30th October 1996. Dr. Richard J. Roberts, Nobel Laureate and director of research at New England Biolabs Inc., USA, gave a lecture on 'From Splicing to Stockholm' on 20th November 1996. V i s i t i ng Scholars * Prof. James Mayer, world-renowned materials scientist, visited Shaw College as its 1996-97 Sir Run Run Shaw Distinguished Visiting Scholar, and delivered a public lecture entitled 'Revelations Beneath the Surface: The Science of Art' on 13th January 1997. * Prof. Lawrence J, Lau, the first Kwoh-Ting Li Professor of Economic Development at Stanford University, visited Chung Chi College as the Siu Lien Ling Wong Visiting Fellow 1996-97 in February 1997. Prof. Lau gave several talks to staff and students and attended the college's 45th Anniversary Public Seminar and Annual Education Conference held on 21st and 22nd February 1997.
