Bulletin Autumn‧Winter 1997

'97CU Alumni Day O ver2,300 alumni of the University returned to the Sha Tin campus with their families on 28th June for the '97 CU Alumni Day. Some of them had travelled thousands of miles from overseas to witness the dawning of a new era in Hong Kong and to participate in the activities organized by the individual colleges. Blessed with sunny weather, '97 CU Alumni Day opened with tree-planting ceremonies in the late morning on the campuses of the four colleges. At noon the alumni gathered at their respective colleges for a sumptuous college lunch. This was followed by another tree-planting ceremony on the central campus in the afternoon, and the inter-collegiate games competition held at the University Sports Centre. After three rounds of exhilarating games, the Shaw and New Asia teams emerged equally successful, thus sharing the overall championship. United College won a special prize for the best cheering team. Outside the sports centre, the young and the young-at-heart whiled away the time at a fun fair. As the final event of the day, a guided bus tour of the University brought the participants to the latest developments on the campus. Chung Chi Alumni Gathering To celebrate the 45th anniversary of Chung Chi College, the college alumni association organized a college alumni gathering from 28th June to 2nd July 1997. Part of the programme coincided with '97 CU Alumni Day, and close to 1,000 alumni 一 a fifth of whom had flown all the way from Australia, Canada, Sabah, Singapore, and the US — returned to the University campus for the double celebration. In a reunion variety show held on the evening of 28th June, Chung Chi alumni from all over the world sang, danced, and paraded their other talents on stage. Special performances were given by the alumni of the classes of '57, '67, '77 and '87, as well as the fresh graduates of 1997. On 29th June, participants were given a tour of the urbanized sections of the New Territories, and new developments like the Tsing Yi-Lantau Highway, the Gold Coast, and Lingnan College. More commemorative and celebratory activities were scheduled for the following three days, including a seminar on the political situation of Hong Kong on the eve of the handover, a thanksgiving service, and a farewell dinner.
