Gifts a n d D o n a t i o n s The University has recently received from local and overseas individuals and foundations the following gifts and donations in support of its programmes and projects ： (1) From Dr. Wilson T.S. Wang HK$2,000,000 for establishing a visiting professorship scheme in language education in the University. (2) From Banca Popolare di Bergamo ITL2,876,000 for awarding two scholarships of ITL1,438,000 each to students studying Italian to attend a summer course at the Istituto Universitario di Bergamo in 1997. (3) From Prof. Chung Yu-to HK$100,000 fo r establishing an endowment fund for awarding an annual prize of $5,000 to a second-year full-time undergraduate student of the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education from 1997-98. (4) From Machiavelli Centra di Lingua e Cultura Italiana per Stranieri ITL3,750,000 for granting a maximum of 10 awards of ITL375,000 each to students studying Italian to attend a summer course at the Machiavelli Centro in Florence, Italy, in 1997. (5) From Motorola Semiconductors Hong Kong Limited nine one-third tuition-fee equivalent scholarships annually fo r three students each of the departments of computer science an d engineering, electronic engineering, and systems engineering and engineering management from 1997-98. (6) From The S.L. Pao Education Foundation HK$262,174 for awarding four scholarships for postgraduate students to pursue further studies abroad in 1996-97. (7) From The Tung Foundation and Orient Overseas Container Line Ltd. HK$37,000 for awarding a number of travel awards to undergraduate students for attending overseas conferences or conduct study-travel projects in 1996-97. (8) From United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia US$3,000 annually for awarding a number of scholarships for research on women an d gender from 1996-97. (9) From Universita Cattolic a del Sacro Cuore ITL18,000,000 for granting a maximu m of 12 awards of ITL1,500,000 each to students studying Italian to attend an international workshop at the Universita Cattolica de l Sacro Cuore held in the summer of 1997. (10) From Universita per Stranieri at Perugia ITL850,000 for granting an award to a student studying Italian to attend a summer course at the Italian University for Foreigners in Perugia, Italy, in 1997. (11) From Chiang Ching Ku o Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange ： a. to the Department of Anthropology ： i. HK$39,363.38 as the final instalment for the publication of Taiwan Studies ： A Journal of Translation undertaken by Prof. Joseph Bosco ； ii. a further donation of HK$78,970.52 to support a research project on food culture in Taiwan undertaken by Prof. David Wu ； b. to the Department of Architecture a further donation of HK$57,727.32 to support a research project on oral architectural history of China undertaken by Prof. Tunney Lee ； c. to the Department of History a further donation of HK$62,360.14 to support the comparative study of Chinese and world history undertaken by Prof. Leung Yuen-sang ； d. to the Chinese Medicinal Material Research Centre a farther donation of HK$130,344.05 to support a research project on the standardization of subject headings for a database of traditional Chinese medicine literature undertaken by Prof. Paul But ； e. to the Department of Sociology a further donation of HK$39,098.58 to support a research project on new forms of equity in mainland China undertaken by Dr. Isabella Thireau ； and f. to the Department of Music HK$53,471.86 as the final instalment for the research project on comparative study of Taoist music undertaken by Prof. Tsao Pen-yeh. (12) From Cochlear Limited HK$25,000 to sponsor the publication of Speech Perception Assessment for Cantonese undertaken by the Department of Surgery. (13) From Rotary Club of Shatin HK$20,000 to sponsor the printing cost of brochures on prevention of cervical cancer published by the Department of Anatomical and Cellular Pathology. (14) From Action Committee Against Narcotics HK$13,000 to support the research project o n drug abuse undertaken by the Department of Psychiatry. (15) From Mr. Cheung Kee-cheong HK$8,000 to the Department of Surgery for research purposes.
