L u k and Mr. Robert N g have been nominated b y the Chancellor as members of the University Council for three years f r om 14th November 1997. • Mr. Chan Kam-lam, Dr. Law Cheung-kwok, and Dr. Tang Siu-tong have been elected by members of the Provisional Legislative Co u n c i l as members of the Un i v e r s i t y Council from 5th December 1997. VC H o n o u r e d Prof. A r t h u r L i, vice-chancellor, has recently been admitted an Ho n o r a ry Fellow of the As s o c i a t i on of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland and Ho n o r a ry Fello w of the Royal College of Surgeons i n Ireland. P r o f . Ch a r l e s K a o E l e c t ed as F e l l ow o f t he R o y a l So c i e ty Prof. Charles K. Kao, former vice-chancellor of the Un i v e r s i ty a n d currently h o n o r a r y professor of engineering, has been elected as a fellow of the Royal Society. Founded in 1660, the Royal Society is one of the oldes t a nd mo st p r e s t i g i o u s academies of science in the Western w o r l d t h at p r o m o te t he n a t u r al a n d a p p l i ed sciences. The society consists of over 1,100 fellows, and Prof. Kao is the t h i rd fellow of Chinese o r i g in l i n k e d w i t h H o n g K o n g , besides Profs. Y.W. Kan and Tsui Lap Chee. N e w D e a n o f E n g i n e e r i ng Prof. P.C. Ching, professor i n the Department of Electronic Engineering, ha s been elected Dean of Engineering for three years f r om 1st January 1998.
