Leader in Asia Mr. Cheng Che-hoo According to senior computer officer of the ITSC Mr. Cheng Che-hoo, membership to the H K I X is open. Currently it has about 60 members — all locally registered ISPs . Several large ISPs outside Ho n g K o n g are connected to H K I X t h r o u g h their subsidiaries-or partners. They constitute about 10 per cent of the data exchange through HK I X . ‘ H K I X belongs to the firs t batch o f Internet exchanges of its kind in Asia, and is also the most successful to date, thanks in large part to the efforts o f all our colleagues,' Mr. Cheng pointed out. The University f r e q u e n t l y r e c e i v es e n q u i r i e s f r o m o v e r s ea s organizations about collaborating w i t h th e H K I X , wh i c h has the f u ll potential to become the Internet hub o f the As i a Pacific region. ‘ Th i s depends on whether there are sufficient resources to support its development. It has its origins i n the Hong Ko ng Education I n f o r ma t i on Ne t wo r k , developed in 1994 by the Department of Information Engineering. The project recruited a group of secondary school teachers as members, introduced to them the Internet, and provided them w i t h Internet connectivity. I n 1996 , the department believed the t i me was r i pe t o en c ou r age s e c o n d a ry s t u d e n ts to use t h e I n t e r n e t . I t t h u s e n t e r ed i n t o collaboration w i t h the Ho n g Ko n g J o i n t S c h o o l E l e c t r o n i c s a n d Computer Society, and, w i t h the s p o n s o r s h ip o f T h e C h i n e se Un i v e r s i t y, established the Ho ng K o n g S c h o o l N e t , w h i c h subsequently recruite d over 2,000 secondary school teachers and students as members.
