•Greate r Flexibilit y i nUniversity Admission Mr. Eddy Yeung, senior assistant registrar, pointed ou t that the JUPAS Sub-system fo r School Principals' Nomination s was approved for implementation by the Heads of Universities Committee i n 1997. Under the scheme, secondary school principals can recommend fo r admission t o local universities students wh o stand out i n non-academic areas. The Chinese University initiated the Self-recommendation Scheme i n 1998 t o provide a new application channel for students wh o excel i n extracurricular activities. A n d then i n 2001, it launched the C U HK Sports Scholarship Scheme t oencourage Ho ng Kong' s outstanding athletes to pursue university studies. Awardees are required to be members o fthe Hong Kong Team or Youth Team, o routstanding athletes i n interschool competitions. The scheme gives these young people the opportunity to realize their full potential in sports and academic studies at The Chinese University. Mr. Yeung indicated that the University has plans t oopen up more admissions channels to encourage the development o f multiple intelligences i n secondaryschool students. The message t o students, teachers, and parents i s that non-academic abilities should not be neglected i na y o u n g person's development. I n th e long run, he said, universities an d secondary schools w i l l have to wo rk together to reform their curriculum structures. Schools should no t implement subject streaming too early on as that wo u ld limit the students' choices when they apply for university admission, whereas universities should make their admission requirements more flexible.
