Research News A t o t a l o f 161 r e s e a r ch p r o p o s a l s s u b m i t t ed b y academic and research staff of the University have been a w a r d ed e a rma r k ed grants t o t a l l i n g HK$96,220,798 f r o m the Research Grants Co u n c il (RGC) for 2001-2. The U n i v e r s i ty also r e c e i v e d a d i r e ct a l l o c a t i on o f HK $ 16 m i l l i o n to finance sma l l projects costing less thanHK$200,000 each. For 2001-2, the g o v e r nme nt has ma d e available some HK$390.7 m i l l i on fo r selected research proposals s u bm i t t ed b y academic a nd research personnel i n the UGC - f u n d e d tertiary institutions, and HK$72.5 m i l l i o n f o r d i r e ct a l l o c a t i on to the i n s t i t u t i o ns t o finance small projects. T h e 161 C U H K p r o j e c ts selected f o r e a r m a r k ed g r a n ts f a l l i n t o f o u r s u b j e ct d i s c i p l i n e s : b i o l o g y a n d m e d i c i n e (50); engineering (51); physical sciences (21); a n d the humanities , social sciences' a ndbusinessstudies(39), I n t e r m s o f t he n u m b e r o f p r o j e c t s s uppo r t ed and total allocations received, the Un i v e r s i ty achieved the highest score amo n g the eight local tertiary institutions.
