• Deepenin g Understanding o f C h i n e s e C u l t u r e Prof. Chang Song-hing and Prof. Yeung Chung-kee of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature teamed up w i t h Prof. Kan Wing-kay o f the Department of Computer Science and Engineering to launch the Quality Education Scheme o n Chinese Culture in August 1998. In the course of two years, activities of varying scales and natures were organized, such as visits to the Chi L i n Nunne r y to learn about Tang architecture, talks on traditional Chinese society by Prof. Ambrose K i n g and on Chinese culture b y Prof. Lo Wai-luen. Some 200 schools and 15,000 students benefited fro m the project, whose homepage at http:/ / bowen.chi.cuhk.edu.hk also provides information on studies of Chinese language and literature to matriculating student s and their teachers. It has had over 100,000 visits to date. Drama appreciation: watching a performance of a take-off on a famous Chinese historical story: The Water Margin 《水滸傳》. Calligraphy appreciation; visit to an exhibition at the Art Museum of the University T h r o u g h these activities, the Depa r tment of Chinese Language and Literature has succeeded i n building a healthy relationship w i t h local secondary schools and amassed a wealth of experience i n organizing cultural events for their students. This year, it received furthe r funding from the University Grants Committee t o launch another project — 'Chinese Culture Interface Project fo r Lower Fo rm Students and Teachers in Secondary Education'. This two- year interschool project aims to arouse the interest of students i n different aspects of Chinese culture and to enhance c ommun i c a t i on and understanding between the Un i v e r s i t y and secondary schools through a series of cultural talks, lessons on artistic appreciation, forums and training sessions for teachers of literature and other cultural subjects.
