Canadian Former Governor General Calls for Tolerance The Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, the Hong Kong-born former Governor General of Canada (1999 to 2005), delivered a lecture titled 'From Hong Kong to Hong Kong in 65 Years' on 12 November 2007 at CUHK. She spoke about Canada as it was when she arrived there as a refugee at the age of three, as well as Canada's idea of citizenship today. Madame Clarkson is an active promoter of tolerance and acceptance within a multi-cultural society. Since leaving the office of Governor General, she has founded the Institute for Canadian Citizenship to help acculturate new Canadian citizens into mainstream Canadian life. Financial Secretary on Commitment The Honourable John Tsang, Financial Secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, shared his views on 'Leadership and Commitment' with some 1,500 students at the assembly of Shaw College on 2 November 2007. M r. Ts a n g e n c o u r a g e d young people to learn more about society, to be socially committed, and to stand up against injustice. He expressed the desire to see university students use their intelligence and knowledge to find solutions to problems plaguing Hong Kong and the world. News in Brief 51
