students to choose from. These belong to four categories: Our Own Heritage; Nature, Technology and the Environment; Society and Culture; and Self and Humanities. Prof. Cheung Chan-fai, Director of University General Education, said, 'The new curriculum has evolved as a result of certain intellectual concerns. It is designed to respond to a core question in university education, that apart from specialized training in one's major subject, what does a university student in Hong Kong today need to emerge at graduation as someone who is educated, cultured and refined?' In addition to GE courses, the office organizes a variety of activities, such as GE Salons, which invites experts from different fields to give talks on topics of common interest. It is hoped that these multidisciplinary and multicultural explorations can stimulate reflection on contemporary world issues and create a discursive atmosphere on campus. General education complements, not contradicts, professional education. It helps professionally trained students to broaden their knowledge and develop their humanistic literacy. With a holistic worldview and good interpersonal skills, our graduates will be able to become the intellectuals most needed by societies of the 21st century. General Education
