58   Chinese University Bulletin Spring • Summer 2008 First Academicians Lecture Series F ive academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) visited CUHK from 28 January to 2 February to host the first lecture series by CAS academicians. The five academicians including Prof. Liu Yixun (Institute of Zoology, CAS), Prof. Sun Handong (Kunming Institute of Botany, CAS), Prof. Zhang Yonglian (Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences [SIBS], CAS), Prof. Zhao Guoping (Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology, SIBS, CAS), and Prof. Ju Gong (Institute of Neurosciences, Fourth Military Medical University), delivered public lectures. Over a hundred participants attended the event. World Bank Chief Economist on Development and Transition P rof. Lin Yifu Justin, the Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank, presented a public lecture on 'Development and Transition: Idea, Strategy and Viability' on CUHK campus on 31 March. Prof. Lin shared his scholarship with over 400 CUHK staff, students, alumni and members of the political and commercial sectors. He analysed why the dominant social thinking about the modernization of developing countries in the 1950s and their transition in the 1990s was incorrect, and how they had shaped government policies and established institutions in these countries.
