10 Chinese University Bulletin No. 1, 2009 Outstanding Research Projects T o realize its aim of helping China become the world’s manufacturing centre, the SIAIT engages in application- driven research that serves the advanced manufacturing and modern service industry. In the next three to five years, the SIAIT will focus on three areas, namely, robotics and intelligent systems, advanced manufacturing equipment, and green technology for automobiles and energy. Powertrain System of New Energy Vehicles A major cause of environmental pollution is the use of cars, yet the present generation of hybrid vehicles has room for improvement. This project by the Centre for Automoti ve El e c tronic s addre s s e s both fundamental and frontier issues in the hybrid vehicle. The aim is to reduce emission and increase fuel efficiency, and develop hybrid s ystems with simple structures, optimal functions, low cost and high reliability. The focus is on the research and application of new materials and methodologies, intelligent integration control and reliability technology.
