The Best and the Brightest 33 CUHK Represents Hong Kong in Top Global Mooting Competition A team of law students from the Chinese University headed to Washington, D.C. in March 2009 to represent Hong Kong in the world’s largest and most prestigious mooting competition, the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. The CUHK team won the qualifying round against The University of Hong Kong and City University of Hong Kong, and took home four out of the five prizes available in the qualifiers, including Best Team, Best Memorial, Best Oralist, and Runner-up to the Best Oralist. Entering its 50th year, the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition attracts participation from over 500 law schools drawn from more than 80 different countries. This year’s Jessup problem concerns the right of one state to use military force unilaterally in another state to protect human rights and prevent ethnic cleansing. Each team had to write two 12,000-word memorials and make complex legal arguments before an illustrious panel of judges. The CUHK team was made up of PCLL and JD students. They were: Spencer Wong (1st left), Peter Chang (2nd left), Chester Hui (3rd left), the Best Oralist, Simone Hui (4th left) and Charmine Cheung (1st right), Runner-up to the Best Oralist. The team was coached by Prof. Michael Ramsden (2nd right) of the Faculty of Law. CUHK Clinches Top Awards in e-Challenge Cup T he Chinese University won the gold, silver and bronze awards for the Hong Kong and Macau region in the biannual Sixth e-Challenge Cup held at Sichuan University, Chengdu on 17 and 18 November 2008. The gold award for the Hong Kong and Macau region went to a team of graduate students of the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management. The winning plan, entitled ‘VMiner–Better than a Chartered Financial Analyst’, introduces an artificial intelligence technology which can provide real-time stock market analysis to individual investors. ‘Paradise of Internet Robots’ took second place and ‘Golden Rice Mountain’ received bronze. Prof. Hugh Thomas, director of the Centre for Entrepreneurship, was the consultant. The e-Challenge Cup competition received over 600 entries from 356 higher education institutions in 31 provinces, and 168 made the finals.
