42   Chinese University Bulletin No. 1, 2009 Honours and Recognition Young Information Scientists Win International Acclaim T hree young scholars recently recruited to join the Department of Computer Science and Engineering were awarded international prizes at the end of 2008. Prof. Lau Lap-chi became the first computer scientist to receive the Canadian Mathematical Society Doctoral Prize. The prize recognizes the outstanding performance of a doctoral graduate of a Canadian university. Prof. Zhang Shengyu (top) and his collaborators came up with an efficient procedure which transforms zero-knowledge protocols secure in the classical setting to another that is probably also secure in the quantum setting. Their research paper received the best paper award in the International Colloquium on Automata, Languages and Programming. Prof. Patrick P.C. Lee (bottom) and his collaborators propose the SoftRepeater system which provides a practical solution to improve the throughput performance of wireless data transfer. The research received the best paper award in the ACM CoNext 2008. CUHK Wins Silver Environmental Award T he Chinese University has been conferred the silver award of the 2008 Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence (HKAEE) Sectoral Awards under the categor y of Public Sector and Non- Government Organizations for its comprehensive and excellent environmental management. No gold prize was awarded under this category this year. A total of 366 entries competed for the Sectoral Awards in the 2008 HKAEE. CUHK came to the fore as the only award winner among tertiary institutions. The 2008 HKAEE was jointly organized by the Environmental Campaign Committee, the Environmental Protection Department and other organizations. The award recognizes the University’s excellence in this aspect, as reflected by its comprehensive green initiatives on all fronts, and the realization of sustainable development concepts such as waste management, energy efficiency, ecological preservation, resource conservation, and environmental education.
