!/ # ) Tel.: 2609 7005/7 Fax.: 2603 5270 E-mail: english-dept@cuhk.edu.hk The research facility, originally called the Comparative Literature Research Unit, was founded in 1979 with the intention of fostering inter-cultural exchanges through the medium of comparative literature studies. From the beginning, this programme has taken a Chinese perspective to complement the work of other comparatists through collaborative scholarly efforts. The programme’s activities dovetail exceptionally well with the stated aims of the University in its dedication to ‘both traditional Chinese scholarship and modern Western scholarship, and to the synthesis of the two’. To this end, the programme wishes to establish contacts with comparatists from all over the world in order to focus attention on areas of mutual interest. Apart from engaging in research, the programme devotes its energies to four other general areas: publications, conferences, building a materials resource centre, and conducting ongoing projects related to casebooks on comparative literature studies. A journal under the title Chinese-International Comparative Literature Bulletin was introduced in 1990. Directories of scholars throughout the world interested in promoting Chinese-Western comparative literature studies and their activities have been compiled, thus keeping comparatists updated on what is going on in the field. In 1996, the bulletin was renamed Comparative Literature & Culture . # " # + Tel.: 2609 8441 Fax.: 2603 5302 E-mail: dept@cse.cuhk.edu.hk A Computer Service Consultancy Unit was established under the Department of Computer Science in 1988. With the latter renamed the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in 1995–96, the unit too was renamed Computer Science and Engineering Consultancy Unit. Its main function is to provide the industrial sector and the academic community with consulting services such as expert advice, system analysis, feasibility studies, simulation, and customized training programmes. The unit is fully supported by the staff of the department whose areas of specialization and industrial experience cover the main branches of computer science and engineering, including computer architecture, artificial intelligence, image and speech processing, numerical analysis, real-world software applications, Chinese processing, computer education, system software, VR and animation, Internet and WWW applications, and protection against computer viruses.
