Research programmes leading to the MPhil and PhD degrees were introduced in 1972 and 1981 respectively, and a taught programme leading to the MSc degree was launched in 1994. In 2001 new programmes on materials science and engineering leading to the BSc, MPhil and PhD degrees will also be introduced. There were some 220 undergraduate major students and over 80 postgraduate students in the department in 2000–1. Statistics is fundamental to all fields such as bioinformatics, life sciences, public health, information engineering, finance, and the social sciences, where quantitative analysis is essential. The Risk Management Science Programme focuses on finance and insurance applications. The curricula of the programmes are well balanced between practice and theory. Flexibility is also given to students to look after their specialized interests. The department possesses advanced computing facilities and powerful software. Its teachers engage actively in research, and have wide-ranging research interests in applied and theoretic statistics. Many have also gained significant international recognition.
