314 Part 5 • Department Profiles and Programmes of Studies Inter-faculty Programme Division of Gender Studies MPhil Programme in Gender Studies This is an interdisciplinary programme administratively housed in the Department of Anthropology. Fields of Specialization Gender Studies examines how human beings are socially and culturally constructed as ‘women’ and ‘men’. It seeks to understand how gender as an important principle of social organization interacts with the political, economic and ideological systems. An interdisciplinary approach is thus appropriate for a comprehensive study of gender. Students pursuing an MPhil in gender studies will do so from within an existing department. They will receive a degree such as Gender Studies (Anthropology), Gender Studies (History), Gender Studies (psychology), etc. Actively participating departments at present include Anthropology, Chinese Language and Literature, English, Government and Public Administration, History, Journalism and Communication, Modern Languages and Intercultural Studies, Nursing, Psychology, Religion, and Sociology. Students may also apply to do gender studies from other departments. Courses Offered First year 1. Seminar in Gender Studies I & II 2. Requirements of the students’ home department Second year 1. Advanced Topics in Gender Studies I & II 2. Thesis 3. Requirements of the students’ home department Student IT Competence IT Proficiency Training (Same as those for undergraduate programmes. Please refer to p.249 of this Calendar .) IT Proficiency Test ( Applicable to students admitted in 2000–1 and thereafter ) All students are required to pass the IT Proficiency Test before they graduate. Students who fail the test will be required to attend an intensive course and retake the test. Any student who fails the test again will be required to attend the intensive course again. Students will be barred from graduation if they do not
