The University 63 by the departments, who are responsible for subject-orientated teaching. The colleges, in turn, are responsible for student-orientated teaching and the provision of residential accommodation. All teaching staff and full-time undergraduate students are assigned to different constituent colleges. Undergraduate Studies At its inception the University’s undergraduate curriculum was based on a combination of the credit unit system and the degree examination system. After a comprehensive review in the mid-80s, the University decided to adopt a pure credit-unit-based curriculum structure. From 1991–92 onwards, greater flexibility was introduced into students’ selection of courses and pace of study. Full-time Undergraduate Studies The University endeavours to provide a wide variety of major and minor programmes to meet the changing needs of society. In the last triennium 1998– 2001, the University introduced nine major programmes — modern languages and intercultural studies under the Faculty of Arts, hotel management and quantitative finance under the Faculty of Business Administration, language education and mathematics education under the Faculty of Education, and Chinese medicine, materials science, molecular biotechnology, and risk management science under the Faculty of Science. Two minor programmes were also introduced: linguistics and intercultural studies under the Faculty of Arts, and information technology under the Faculty of Engineering. In 2001–2, three major programmes were introduced: innovation and design engineering, and internet engineering under the Faculty of Engineering; applied chemistry with management studies under the Faculty of Science; and a minor programme in electronic engineering launched under the Faculty of Engineering. Part-time Undergraduate Studies The Part-time Degree Programmes were first launched in 1981–82 with classes conducted in the evening. The four part-time degree programmes currently offered are music, physical education and sports science, post-registration nursing, and primary education. Postgraduate Studies Master’s programmes were first offered in 1966–67, and the number of programmes has, in 2001–2, increased to 113. Doctoral programmes were first introduced in 1980–81, and the number of programmes has increased to 59 in 2001–2.
