Its objectives are to promote and conduct research in sports medicine and sports science, to promote and conduct related educational programmes, to provide professional expertise and adviso ry support to the sporting community, and to facilitate liaison and interaction with sports medicine and sport science institutions in other parts of the world. The centre was designated as the World HealthOrganization (WHO) Collabo rating Centr e for Sports Medicine an d Health Promotion in 19 96. Its activities involve the participation of the Department of Community and Family Medicine and the School of Public Health. Joint Laboratory for Geoinformation Science Tel.:2609 6538 Fax.:2603 7470 E-mail: nganngan@cuhk.edu.hk Website :http://www.jlgis.cuhk.edu.hk The Joint Lab oratory for Geoinformation Science (JLGIS) was established in 1997 by the Chinese Academy of Sciences andThe ChineseUniversity to provide a base for interdisciplinary and collaborative research in geoinformation science, which includessubjects like remotesensing, geographic modelling, the integration of geoinformation systems, and global positioning systems. The laboratory is also a base for local and intern ational education and training programmes in geoinformation science and technology, and their applications. It is staffed by scholars from the In stitute of Remote Sensing Application and the Institute of Geo grap hy o f th e Ch inese Academy of Sciences, and academics f rom the University’s various faculties. Their research interests cover earth observation methods and systems, sp atial data mining , sp atio -temporal mo delling and visualization, geographic information system design and integ ration, virtual geog raphic enviro nments, artificial in tellig ence an d exper t systems, remote sensing image analysis and processing, virtual reality, urban GIS and housing development,GIS for transport and ITS, spatial population analysis,land surface stability monitoring and modelling, and watershed management systems.
