It originates from the ‘Healthy Schools’ programmesupported by the Quality Education Fund (QEF) and has been involved in territory-wide school health surveillance projects and needs assessment for school health education and health promotion. The results have been widely reported by the media and published in international journals. The centre hasalso received grants from the QEF to launch the Hong Kong Healthy Schools Award Scheme, which buildson theconcept of health-promoting schools to encourage educational achievement, and better health and emotional well- being among pupils. Italso aims to promote staff development, parental education, involvementof whole school community, and linkage with different stakeholders so as to improve the health and well-being of the pupils, parents and teachers, and thecommunity-at-large. In 2002, a PearlRiver Region Liaison Office of the International Union for Health Promotion and Ed ucation ( IUHPE) was set up to cultiv ate a reg ional network to promote health education, enable information of the IUHPE to be disseminated to the Chinese regions, and to encou rage academic exchange. It is the result of five years of intensive research onChina’s urban housing, which enjoyed the continual support of the MOC and the Architectural Society of China. The aim of establishing the centre is to produce high quality, high den sity and low-co st urban housin g in China, to improve the qu ality of living and the efficacy of urban housing in China. Research is focused on the development of building technologies, the use of innovative building materials, and theuseof newmanagement methods, covering areassuch as green architecture design, China housing airducts study, energy conservation study in residential build ings for cold an d extremely cold climates, application of geograp hical information systems on China urban housing, the development of new housing prototypes of middle-high-rise buildings, and China housing policy studies.
