It aims to app ly and gener ate pharmaceutical knowledgein developing high-quality Western and Chinese herbal drugs, especially anticancer, cerebro/cardio-vascular and wound healing drugs, and to help establish HongKong as a centre of excellence for the development of therapeutic pharmaceuticals. The DDC incor porates a vast array of inter -disciplin ary exper tise and facilities within the University, encompassing those related to quality assurance, chemistry, pharmacology (biochemistry, physiology, biology), safety studies, formulation development/pharmacokinetics, and clinical studies. The DDC has multiple laboratories, which are equipped with state-of-the- ar t in strumen ts f or car rying o ut the step -wise p ro cess/stu dies fo r dr ug dev elopment. Th ese include the Chemistry Laborato ry, Pharmacology and Biochemistry Laboratory, Cell and Tissue Cu lture Laboratory, Acute Animal Safety Study Laboratory, Formulation Development Laboratory, Bioanalytical Laboratory, and Clinical Study Laboratory. With the establishment of a drug development infrastructureconforming to international GoodLaboratory Practice (GLP) andGood Clinical Practice (GCP), DDC currently provides awide range of serv ices to th e ph armaceutical in dustr y, namely, b iop harmaceutical/ pharmacokinetic studies, pharmacodynamicstudies, drug-drug interaction studies, formu lation d evelopment, drug quality assurance tests, acute safety/tox icity studies, and clinical studies (especially phase I and II).
