SupportFacilities,Services, andStaffOrganizations 137 The Library System The University Library System coordinates the collections and services of the University Library and the branch libraries — the Elisabeth Luce Moore Library of Chu ng Chi College, the Ch’ien Mu Library of New Asia College, the Wu Chung Multimedia Library of United College, the Li PingMedical Library at the teaching hospital complex in Sha Tin, and the Architecture Library. Excluding the Medical Library, they can accommodate a total of more than 2,200 readers. Th e ho ldings of the Librar y System as at 3 1st Decemb er 2 001 ex ceed ed 1,614 ,00 0 items. Th e entire collection of the Library System comp rises approx imately 659,000 volumes of books an d bound jour nals in East Asian languages and 95 5,000 volumes in Western langu ages. Ther e are more than 30,000 serial titles, including 12,469 active print and electronic subscriptions. Students can borrow books and journalsfrom any library and search items in the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) of the University Library System. Th e Univer sity Lib rar y h ou ses ex tensive co llections in science and engineering, social science and business administration, and each of the branch libraries at the colleges has unique features. The Elisabeth Luce Moore Library holds strong collections in education, music, and religious studies. The Ch’ien MuLibrary houses good collectionsin Chinese literature,fine arts, and philosophy. The Wu Chung Library is a multimedia library. Also located in the Wu Chung Libr ar y is th e American Stu dies Reso urce Library who se nu cleus is an interdisciplinary resource donated by the USIS American Library and a recently donated William Faulkner Co llection. Medical co llections are housed in two different locations — pre-clinical materials in the University Library and clinical materials in the Li Ping Medical Librar y. The Architecture Library collection covers subjects in the buildings industry and environmental sciences. In addition, the University Library System has extensive co llection s of multimedia materials, microfilms, more than 14,000 titles of full-text electronic journals and hundreds of electronic databases. Most of the electronic resources are networked and can be accessed on the World Wide Web or the Library CD- ROM network (CDLAN) via the Campus Network.
