Universities Service Centre for China Studies The Universities Service Centre for Ch ina Studies provides a comprehensive, user-friendly collection of original source materials on contemporary China for scho lar s all ov er th e wor ld. The cen tr e’s libr ar y o n p ost-1 94 9 Chin a is incomparablein its coverage: complete runsfromthe early 1950sup to thepresent of most of China’s provincial and national newspapers; a collection of provincial yearbook s; many hu ndred s of county gazetteers; and a judiciously cho sen collection of the most valuable books available on the mainland, many of which are unavailable elsewhere in the world.Currently the centre subscribesto 2,000 journals andmagazines in Chinese and over 80 inEnglish, and to more than 400 Chinese newspapers. The centre is committed to serving scholars in contemporary China studies everywhere. Overseas researchers at or above the graduate level are eligible to use thecentre free of charge. Faculty of local tertiary institutions as wellas local students enrolled in China-related courses can also have access to its collection. The centre also organizes luncheon seminars on China studies. The Chinese University Press Th e Un iver sity started its pub lish ing activities in 1 967. After a decade of experience in this field, theUniversity established The Chinese University Press in 19 77. Over 1,000 titles in English or Chinese have since been published, covering various subjects, but mostly Chinese culture andChina studies. These publications are widely distributed in Asia, North America,Europe, andAustralia. Since 1 988 the Pr ess has also p ublished g eneral boo ks in add ition to academicpublications. Lastyear the Press published over 40 academic and general titles, includin g bo oks in special series such as the Hong Kong Cen tre for Econ omic Research Series, the Institute o f Chinese Stud ies Series, the MDC Management DevelopmentSeries, and the Modern Chinese Literature Bilingual Series. In addition, the Press published and distributed nine academic journals. In Apr il 199 1, the Press b egan pr odu cin g au dio an d video tapes on educational and commercial subjects, including language skills, management for business executives, and clinical education in various medical disciplines. To date, o ver 80 audio -visual prog rammes have been publish ed. The Press also produces audio-visual programmes for other organizations on a contract basis. The Press hasgood connections with many university presses and academic institutions and societies in Hong Kong and overseas. It has co-published books
