Woo succeeded Sir Kenneth as chairman of the college board in May 1972, a position he resigned from in November 1983 when he was appointed a member of the University Council. He was succeeded by Sir Run Run Shaw. In December 1988, Dr. Woo was elected a permanent member of the board. Sir Run Run was elected honorary chairman and permanent member of the board in December 1991, and was succeeded by Dr. Ho Tim. Dr. Ho Tim retired from this position in June 1995 and was also elected permanent member of the board. The current elected chairman is Mr. Shum Choi-sang. An endowment fund was established in 1973 under the direction of the board of trustees. It provides financial support to many projects and schemes organized by the college, benefiting both students and staff members. The fund is managed by a committee currently chaired by Dr. Thomas H.C. Cheung, vice- chairman of the board of trustees and president of the United College Alumni Association. United College places strong emphasis on whole-person education and broadening the perspective of its students and enhancing their sense of social responsibility. Each year a wide range of activities, including student union and interest groups, leadership training, social services and incentive schemes, organic farming and environmental protection, drama, debate are organized. Through participation in these activities, students develop and improve their personal and social qualities. To keep pace with globalization, students are given increased opportunities to take part in overseas study tours and exchange programmes, so that they can learn to live and interact with people from different parts of the world. The college has expanded in the last few years with the completion of the Si Yuan Amenities Centre in December 2001, providing pub and karaoke entertainment to University members. The Chan Chun Ha Hostel — the fourth student hostel of the college — was completed in August 2004, providing an additional 300 student hostel places. The Si Yuan Amphitheatre is scheduled for completion in September 2005. In 2004–05, a total of 2,408 students were assigned to United College, of whom 1,129 were male and 1,279 female.
