Faculty and Departmental Research/Consultancy Units 143 Orthopaedics and Traumatology with support from the Li Ka Shing Foundation, Stryker Howmedica, and Mr. Tang Yuk Wai. Its mission is to promote the latest orthopaedic knowledge and surgical skills and become a leader in the provision of orthopaedic professional training services and products in the Asia Pacific Region, particularly in mainland China and Hong Kong. A major task of the OLC is to offer high quality and interactive training programmes for different levels of orthopaedic surgeons and nurses. Equipped with the latest IT/AV setup and a state-of-the-art bioskill laboratory, the centre provides both saw-bone and specimen hands-on workshops, live demonstration through video transmission from the operating theatre, and video conference with other institutes. The centre is also venturing into the development and implementation of training programmes in computer-assisted surgical techniques. A virtual surgery training room equipped with a navigation training system and a virtual surgery training system was set up in 2004. Training programmes and workshops are organized to promote new surgical technologies in orthopaedics and traumatology. Its major facilities include an optical coating system for making anti-reflection and high refection coatings, a laser welder for active alignment and welding of optical fiber pigtails to TO-can and butterfly packaged optical devices, a die bonder, a fiber-array active alignment system, U-V cured epoxy deposition system, polishing equipment, wafer scribing and dicing equipment and wire bonders. It is a joint undertaking of GenRx Healthcare Ltd. (a subsidiary of HKR International Ltd.) and the University. It adopts the clinical management protocols developed by the University which is delivered by a multidisciplinary team involving medical specialists, educators, pharmacists, nurses, physical trainers, counsellors and nutritionists. The operation of the centre is supported by a business team which provides client-oriented, affordable and user friendly services to promote health, prevent disease, and enhance quality of life.
