It boasts a teaching team of international standard, and one of the largest libraries in Asia of audio-visual materials, scores, periodicals and books on music. It has its own chamber orchestra, a choir, an early music (Renaissance) ensemble, a Gamelan ensemble, and a Cantonese operatic singing group. Major research areas in the music of China include Cantonese opera, Taoist ritual music, silk-and-bamboo music of Jiangnan, and court music of the Qing dynasty. With respect to Western music, sixteenth- and seventeenth-century liturgical music, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century opera, twentieth-century musical analysis and performance practice form the principal fields of research. Teachers also engage actively in composition and performance. Its staff members have a wide range of academic and research interests, including Chinese/Eastern philosophical schools such as Confucianism, Taoism, Moism, and Buddhism; Western philosophical traditions such as analytic philosophy and phenomenology; and philosophical disciplines such as ethics, applied ethics, aesthetics, philosophy of language, and social and political philosophy. The department strives to capitalize on Hong Kong’s unique cultural and geographical setting by emphasizing the study of comparative philosophy. It provides all-round academic and practical training in translation to prepare students for employment or further studies in the discipline. Besides offering courses in the fundamentals of translating and translation studies, the department has also made special efforts in developing courses in applied translation, information technology, and translation between Chinese and non- English languages.
