ELTU is keenly aware of the increasing importance of global English and the impact of globalization on language use. The unit is also sensitive to students’ need to prepare for the new Common English Proficiency Assessment (CEPA). It provides a range of courses which aim to develop students’ competence in English in appropriate academic and professional contexts. From 2004, all undergraduates are required to take at least three credits of English (six credits for S6 entrants). S6 entrants are also required to take three credits in Expository Writing. With a teaching staff of about 25, ELTU enjoys a wealth of expertise in language education, especially in teaching adult Chinese learners. The teaching team’s strength is further enhanced by a good balance of native and non-native speakers, and by the staff’s experience of living and working in bilingual contexts around the world.
