298 Part 5 • Department Profiles and Programmes of Studies Faculty of Arts Division of Anthropology PhD Programme This is a research-oriented programme in social and cultural anthropology. Fields of Specialization The programme focuses geographically on China, and on East and Southeast Asian studies. Research topics include nationalism, ethnicity and identity, globalization and transnationalism, religion, gender, development and social change, food culture, tourism, and archaeology and cultural heritage. MPhil Programme Fields of Specialization Same as those for the PhD programme. MA Programme This is a taught programme in social and cultural anthropology for persons who do not have a background in anthropology. Majors in anthropology are only eligible for the programme if they wish to concentrate on one of the department’s specializations, such as the anthropology of East Asia, or ethnicity and identity. Division of Chinese Culture Based on the University’s long tradition and distinguished record in promoting Chinese cultural studies, the Graduate Division of Chinese Culture offers postgraduate training to English-speaking students from overseas who are interested in doing research on Chinese culture.
