84 Part 2 • General Information The University has established a number of multilateral, and cross-disciplinary research centres with its partners such as the Joint Centre of Natural Drugs and Biotoxins, the Joint Scoliosis Research Centre, the William Mong Eye Centre of Tsinghua University & CUHK, the Shanghai–Hong Kong Development Institute, the Joint Research Centre for Biomedical Engineering, the Epithelial Cell Biology Research Centre, the Joint Laboratory for Plant Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, the Joint Centre for Intelligence Engineering, the Joint Laboratory for Geoinformation Science, the Hong Kong Base of Research, Development and Training of the National Remote Sensing Centre of China, and the CUHK– Tsinghua University Joint R&D Programme on Chinese. These centres play a very important role in promoting high-standard scientific research and enhancing collaborative relationship among the partners. The University, together with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has also solicited support from business enterprises to set up the Shanghai–Hong Kong–Anson Research Foundation for CAS and CUHK in Molecular Biosciences. With support from various foundations, the University organizes conferences related to academic development and social changes which are attended by renowned scholars the world over. The University is also in close collaboration with mainland institutions and organizations on a wide spectrum of research projects. They include the Chinese Traditional Ritual Music Research Programme; Comparative Studies on Economic Development and Women’s Family Status in Chinese Societies —Hong Kong Study; Global Entrepreneurship Monitor: Hong Kong and Shenzhen, Education and Work: The Efficiency of Schooling on Human Resources Development in Three Regions of China; SARS Molecular Epidemiology Research Consortium; Real-time PC-based Visualization of Chinese Visible Human (Virtual Anatomy); and Improving the Grain Quality of Super-hybrid Rice. The University is actively involved in providing training and consultancy services to governmental agencies and the business community on the mainland. Both regular and tailor-made courses are offered. In response to the rapid economic growth of the mainland and the need for high calibre business executives, the University has launched an MBA Programme in Finance in cooperation with Tsinghua University, a joint Master of Science Programme in Biotechnology and EMSc Programme in Science in Logistics and Supply Chain Management with Tsinghua University’s Graduate School in Shenzhen, a Master of Professional Accountancy Programme with the Shanghai National Accounting Institute, and a Master Programme in Psychology, and a Master of Accountancy Programme with Peking University. The University has also actively collaborated with the Shenzhen Municipal Government in promoting further linkages with Shenzhen in education, science research, training of talents and the establishment of the Shenzhen–Hong Kong Innovation Zone. The University’s Beijing Liaison Office, located on the campus of Peking University, provides logistics support to exchange activities conducted by University members and helps enhance cooperation with mainland institutions. The University has embraced the ideal of a broader student mix. Since 1998, it has been recruiting outstanding mainland undergraduate students. Starting from the 2005–06 student intake, the University is the first local university to take part in the National Colleges and Universities Enrollment System, through which it can reach over four million candidates in 16 provinces and four municipalities on the mainland. 270 mainland undergraduates will be recruited in 2006.
